Help! 1st ultrasound showed gestational sac and yolk sac but no fetus.

Hi everyone, I am calculated to be 8 weeks & 3 days pregnant today based on my last period start date. I am 29 y/o & also have PCOS - so my periods are always irregular.

Went in for my first ultrasound today and the tech said there was only a gestational sac and yolk sac visible but no signs of the fetus. My heart dropped as I was expecting to see my baby and a heartbeat.

The tech also said that I may be a bit earlier along as expected OR she said that I may miscarry in the next couple of weeks which also put me in shock. Has anyone experienced this before? Is this normal? I'm very worried, heartbroken and not sure what to do at this point. For now I am just waiting for my next appointment to see my family Dr..

If anyone has any advice or input, it would be so greatly appreciated.

Trying to stay positive in the mean time..

Hi there! So sorry for this stressful finding. Just like the tech said, it could be either scenario. If you ovulated late in your cycle, you could be earlier than you thought. With PCOS I imagine you had irregular cycles. If you typically have longer than 28 day cycles, gestational age doesn't go exactly by LMP.
For example, my cycles are longer than 28 days. If I went by LMP my due date would be Dec 20. But since I know when I ovulated (April 3), my due date is actually Dec 25 which we confirmed with a dating ultrasound

Hi love! Thank you for your response. I'm hoping the situation is caused by late ovulation and that I'm earlier than expected. I definitely have irregular periods. I have a 2nd ultrasound follow up booked for next Wednesday and hopefully all goes well. Just trying to stay positive at this point as there is nothing else I could do but wait.

Im so happy for you reading this..what a relief! My first ultra sound only showed the yolk sac too and I panicked..they thought I was 7ish weeks. I go back Friday which has now been 3 weeks later so hoping to find a heartbeat. My conception date tells me 7 and a half weeks today but my hcg showed 7weeks over 3 weeks ago. Hard when we have irregular periods and very scary!

Same thing happened to me . one day i went to the hospital cuz i had a high fever nd my bottom back i was in major pain. So they took a pregnancy test nd i was pregnant im also irregular so it was weird. (But i was happy) so they took blood work nd my hcg levels were low really low after that they did an ultasound both . they didnt see anything then they told me it may b an ectopic pregnancy (that devestaded me) I stayed there for 1 week everyday my hcg level were increasing. So now im 11weeks pregant i was one week when i went to the hospital so hopefully its just that ur early. I hope this calmed up Good luck on ur new most exciting journy.

I'm so happy and thankful everything is ok. It was a tough couple of weeks going through not knowing what to expect. Thanks for the encouragement love, I hope your pregnancy goes smoothly from now on. Xo

I just had the same thing happen to me. I thought i was atleast 8 weeks but miscalculated and was only 4. At 5 weeks, thats when the fetus begins to form.

Good luck on your next follow-up love. I went in thinking I was 8 weeks and a couple of days but I was actually about 5 weeks and a half. My follow-up appointment turned out fine, we were able to locate a heartbeat which I am estatic about. Take care and stay positive! Xo

I can't tell you how often I read this.  It seems to happen rather frequently in early pregnancy.  Trust and it will most likely show at your next check.  hugs

How are you doing? Have you gone in for a follow-up? Hang in there mama, everything will be okay as long as you stay positive. Xo

The doctor didn't tell me what it measured. But insisted I go for HCG testing as well as another follow-up ultrasound this coming Wednesday (this will be 2 weeks since my last ultrasound). I'm hoping things will turn out okay, I will stay positive for the time being! How far along are you now since you found a heartbeat? So glad things are going well for you.
