Mastitis??

My son is 4 days old and breastfeeding. I'm a nervous wreck about possibly getting mastitis. My left breast is harder than my right one. I'm not sure how you get this. Are there ways of preventing it? And is it even too soon to get it?

Mastitis will also feel like the flu, had it eight first.  Even if you get it, the antibiotics full fix things eight up.  Just keep nursing a lot.

Ok, thanks ladies. My mom had mastitis and told me it's extremely painful. I'm just freaking out. Between l&d and the after birth pains, I'm just so nervous and paranoid to be in an immense amount of pain again:( I feel like I've had all I can take. I'll try your suggestions and see how it goes. I bet you are just engorged. Take a hot shower like suggested ^ and you can manually express some milk in the shower. Offer baby that side first at next feeding.

A heating pad or hot shower should help soften up your breast as well.

As long as you continue to switch breast at each feeding. And I also pumped in between times you should be fine. I actually got it while pregnant with my second child toward the end. But it all worked out.
