Rh negative

Anyone Rh negative and had or have to get the shot at 28 weeks? I got mine today but after researching, the only reason you need it is if the babies blood is positive (which would mean the fathers blood is positive) and mixes with the moms blood during pregnancy and it said that rarely ever happens. Frustrated that they made me get the shot when it sounds like it's very uncommon for the blood to mix during preg.

I don't know where taunted octopus got that info but as a nurse I can tell you that completely not true. The reason you have to get it is because the blood mixes at delivery- it causes the mother's body to develop antibodies.  It doesn't cause complications with first pregnancies.  The issue arises in future pregnancies. The antibodies remember and attack future fetuses, which can result in miscarriage. Sometimes they test the dad for his blood type, but most of the time they just air in the side of caution and administer the shot to the mom. They do give infants a shot of Vitamin K after birth because they have difficultly clotting when they're born.

I had it with this pregnancy and my last. This pregnancy I had noninvasive rh testing done at 10 weeks though so I knew the baby has a positive blood type. If your in the U.S. ask your dr. About it! All they do is take a vial of blood and send it to a lab where they are able to separate out the fetal dna in your blood stream, they can tell you the rh factor and the gender ans its 99% accurate. Best test I ever paid for.

Durring pregnancy it is rare, but if it happens it will give the baby an immunological disorder that will have its body destroying its own red blood cells. The disorder is 100% fatal, and usually kills within 2wks. The real risk is at delivery where it is more likely your blood will mix cause the disorder in your baby and cause a clotting disorder in you both fatal. That's why if your baby is Rh+ you'll get the shot again after birth.

I am o neg and have had the shot during every pregnancy. I had it at 6 weeks this preg and will have it again sometime before baby is born..I believe on 9/9 at my 28 week appointment.  It is very normal because the risk of death in mother or child is high (according to my doctor) if the blood mixes.

I have had yo have the shot as well. I would rather not risk the chance of the bloods mixing and me getting sick., they can't tell the babies blood until birth. I have one more shot at 34 weeks and then after birth if the babies blood is positive.
