You know how blood types are positive or negative? Like A+ or O-? You and I are a negative. Your body sees a different blood type as a foreign invader even though that invader is your baby. So, it makes antibodies to attack the invader.
The shots prevent this, and if not done, can affect your subsequent pregnancies. And the shots are perfectly safe :)

I had blood drawn then had to wait an hour or something then got the Rhogam shot (O negative here). Had a sore arm for a bit, as I do after anything involving needles, but didn't notice anything else.

I'm on my 3rd baby and I get the shot too it just means you have a negative blood type don't worry it is fine it will not hurt the baby and there are no side effects it will be like you never got it  :-)

You're blood type is Rh negative. Which means you do not have the D antigen on your red blood cells. If your baby is Rh positive( baby has the D antigen) your body will make antibodies that will start an immune response and attack the Rh positive red blood cells of your baby. The Rhogam will prevent any immune response your body would have due to your baby's Rh positive blood type. Rhogam is common and awesome! P.s. I am a Medical Technologist. You've got nothing to worry about. Getting Rhogam is safe and common!
