Stripping membranes

What's everyone's opinion/experience with membrane sweeps?

39 weeks with #2. 2 1/2 - 3 cm dilated. 80% effaced.

My midwife wants to strip them and if that doesn't work I'll be induced. I was induced with my first and it was awful!

I had a sweep done with my second.i get this liver problem in each pregnancy.baby had just literally turned 38weeks. I too would of had to be induced the next day if it didn't work but what can I say the midwife had the magic touch. Had sweep at about 8pm. Waters broke like a tidal wave at 5.30 and Lil meme was born later that day. If you need a sweep you need a sweep.dont stress out about it as stress isn't good for buba. Think of it this way. Your hours away from having buba cradled in your arms.

If your only options are Monday induction or try sweeping the membrane and see if that pushes you into labor naturally... you've gotta weigh those 2 options and see if it's worth it for you!

Accupuncture is also supposed to help bring on labor.

Personally - I've already decided if I get to 39 weeks with no signs I am getting mine swept because my Dr. Isn't going to let me go much past 40 weeks and I want to try everything possible to avoid induction.

Good luck with your choice!

Hi there,

I had this done with my first baby. Although yes it hurts a bit it's more pressure then anything and it does not take very long, not so bad. It does not hurt the baby and if you are 39 weeks your baby is completely developed.

You need to decide for yourself but doctors and midwives do this all the time. The only risk is if they break your water while stripping them you will be having your baby right away (well as labour progresses).

Good luck!

I've heard that.   But is it worth it?

Personally I don't recommend it. Babies know when to come! What are your birth goals if I may ask?(:

I'd like to do it all naturally this time... but if that doesn't happen by Monday I'll be induced.
