Toxoplasmosis

Hi there! I'm almost 12 weeks, and I live with a family member that has cats. I went to throw out the trash from our bathroom, and opened our main trash barrel. When I opened it I could immediately smell kitty litter (which was in a tied up plastic grocery bag). I was worried about toxoplasmosis because of smelling the litter. The cats have been indoors for months, and they eat only canned cat food and sometimes a piece of lunch meat turkey. I'm afraid I exposed myself to the virus when I threw away my trash and smelled the kitty litter in the barrel. Is there a worry? Thanks for your help!

I wouldn't change the litter or anything , but just throwing away the trash should be fine . And you smelling it is fine also.

I have 3 indoor kitties and my hubby cleans the litter boxes totally once a week but I scoop them in the middle of the week as well with gloves. As long as you immediatley wash your hands after touching kitty litter or digging in the dirt outside you should be fine! Its rare for an indoor cat to get toxoplasmosis unless it is brought in on human shoes otherwise the cat themselves need to come into contact with the parasite.
