amniocentesis?

im  27 yo,15w6d pregnant, i went to my 1st prenatal appointment last week and it was suggested i take an amniocentesis. This is my first child and i don't know if i should do it.after hearing about down syndrome and other defects, it has gotten me really scared and its all i can think about now.there are no disorders of any sort on my side of the family and on my husbands side.i talked to another person about it and she said she gotten it done with her 1st child and the test came back positive, she went through with the needle stuff and lost her baby at 20 weeks.her sister also did the same thing and she also lost her baby. my husband keeps telling me there's nothing wrong and everything will be fine.he has 3 kids with a previous gf and there ''normal''. can you women please give me your suggestions and your experiences??

I chose not to get the quad screening or amnio with both my pregnancies. I didn't want to know either way. I was gonna love my children either way so i didn't think it was necessary to find out. Plus sometimes if its serious they will detect it on the ultrasound. But i didn't want to worry about false positives or the risk of miscarrying after the amnio.

Just like the lady before said.. if you wouldn't terminate your pregnancy if something WAS abnormal then why put your self through it... plus it will just make you more stressed out.. its a pointless test in my opinion unless you have a family history of things to be concerned of

I had my first child at 19 and got this procedure done at 15 weeks +. My daughter showed a lump on her neck and this was the reason I was offered this. My pregnancy ran smoothly after the procedure apart from morning sickness. My daughter is here now and is 6 years old. It was discovered that my daughter has CAH which means she needs lifetime medication but other than that runs a healthy lifestyle has friends, goes to school the same as other children, plays with friends. It dose not affect her daily life what so ever. My option on the matter its up to you weather to get the procedure done I got it done to put my mind at ease. I wish you all the best of luck with your pregnancy. Take care x

I didn't do any of the tests for one didn't like the idea of possible misscarage and I trust in god thatthat babies will be ok and they have all been perfectly healthy the only thing they ever got really was jondis I'm not sure how to spell it lol. I figure my 9 months of torture is compensation for having easy births.

I did the amio because they didnt know for sure why he failed the afp and they did want to be prepare for his birth. He had surgery the day he was born. Being ready ahead of time saved his life. He had 5 surgeries and blood transfusion. Im glad I did the amio. He is now 7 and living strong!

I chose not to do the quad screen or amniocentesis. With the quad screen, it doesn't give you a definite answer, just the chances your child may have of having something. The risk of miscarriage with an amnio deterred me from that!I figure the results weren't going to change how I feel about my baby and I didn't want to stress the rest of my pregnancy over it .

When I was tested for that I did a blood screen first and it came back ok. I didn't think they wven thought about that step unless ur blood test came back abnormal

Ya I had The First Trimester Scan Where They Measure The Neck For Down Syndrome. I Would Tell Him You Don't Want It. He Can't Force You Into A Test . You Are not Comfortable With.

I had abnormal lab results and my dr still didn't feel like an amnio was needed. If there isn't any lab or family history reason to do it I wouldn't I'm still not doing it. One thing you might want to ask yourself is would you end the pregnancy if something showed up wrong if the awnser is no then why is there a need when less dangerious tests can be done after birth if neefed.

Ignore the advice. Especially since there has been no quad and no ultrasound.

I wouldn't simply because of the risk of miscarriage. I took the quad and it said we had a 1:97 ratio of having Downs. I was 3 weeks earlier than what the doctor said and that's why we had a high chance after they fixed the dates we were fine. We did the ultrasound and it was fine.

Don't worry listen to your husband that's why we opted out of the quads this time around because no matter what we will love our child.

no they havent done a quad test yet..they told me i needed to get it done from 16-20 weeks..then the dr said aminocentesis would be after the blood test.my dr is from africa and has a heavy accent, so its hard for me to explain myself to him..i don't know why he keeps suggesting the amnio, even though the quad test hasn't been done.so i guess im worried for nothing??

Did you do the quad screen blood test? Its odd they jump right to an amnio. At 27 you are not high risk. Usually around 35+ that is considered high risk. You can ask about the materni 21 test more accurate than a quad screen.I am 29 and dr said 1 in 376 chance for me. They can do a ultra sound called nucual fold test too.
