I had my 1st baby at 32 weeks and a few days (can't remember exactly how many) she weighed 4lbs 120z. She had a breathing tube for about 4 days. She had a few other issues that where quickly resolved . She was in the nicu for about 3weeks. No lasting effects from it whatsoever and is a happy healthy 7 year old.

I believe if they can help it they try to stop labor that happens before 35/36 weeks because although 40 is what we're aiming for 37 is considered full term. between 34 and 36 the lungs are still developing so your baby may have breathing problems if born before then, not always but it is a possibility they like to try to avoid
