Don't start pumping until after you have your baby and your milk comes in

You really shouldn't pump before baby is born.  Your only producing colostrum at that point and that's what baby needs most. Your regular breastmilk won't come in until a few days after baby's born (but all baby needs is colostrum before then). Plus pumping can cause you to go into preterm labor.

I would definitely ask your doctor. I've had a friend tell me pumping can cause you to go into early labor...

Unless you know when you will be going in I wouldn't pump too soon. Most lactation consultants would tell you to wait until after baby comes, but it truly is up to you.
