breastfeeding fail. need help, advice

I had to start combo feeding at the hospital bc I wasnt producing enough milk and the hospital wanted to regulate my baby's sugar with feedings as oppsose to keeping him with an iv bc he was born hypoglycemic. Well now that my milk came in fully he doesn't want to take it anymore , he prefers the nipple from the bottle. What can I do? I want to fully breastfeed :( . plus the pain from my boobs being so full is horribly bad. And pumping doesn't help much.

It is easier for baby to get milk from a bottle than a breast. Your baby has become lazy and expects the milk to just flow from the nipple with out much effort. If you want to breast feed you need to do just that for at least 6 weeks postpartum. The latch for bottle and breast are also different and babies can get confused. My advise is to start trying to nurse 15 minutes before his scheduled feeding and delay bottle feedings by 10-15 minutes to try to get him to nurse. Offer breast for every feeding first and make sure to rub your nipple against the roof of his mouth to make him have his sucking reflex while nursing, try skin to skin contact by striping him to his diaper and removing your shirt. If you do have to give bottle buy a very slow flow nipple maybe even try one made for premie babies so he has got to work extra hard. You may want to express some breast milk into his mouth while trying to nurse and kinda massage and squeeze your breast to make the milk move faster and that will encourage him to drink. Good luck.

Nipple shields are awesome. I had to use them for the first couple months, and by the time we switched him to a bottle, he was used to the bottle - like nipple already from nursing with me :)

Try a nipple shield or contact your lactation consultant from the hospital or from the health department, they should be able to help you
