glucose test

Do you have to eat something before taking the glucose test? And if so does it matter what?

I was told to not eat or drink an hr prior to my appointment because it would affect the test results.

Failed with my 2ND because they just said to eat something and I had half a bagel.  Since then they've said eggs and I've never had a problem.  I have low blood sugar so they always tell me to eat lots of protein so the test doesn't make me sick.

There are 2 Glucose test. The one hour is screening test. Typically they don't tell you to not eat or drink prior to this. I chose not to eat anything the morning of the test. Because if your glucose is too on the screening test you will need to take the full glucose tolerance test (diagnostic test). Which is a pain.

I failed my 1 hour test (1 point too high) so had to do the full three hour test. For this you do have to fast for at least 8-10 hours before the test. You have to drink twice as much sugar water (100 gm). And you have to wait there while they take multiple blood samples in that ttime. If your glucose is to high at this test then you get the diagnosis of gestational diabetes. So accurate blood glucose is critical so the fasting is very important.

Some docs skip the screening 1 hour test altogether and start with the three hour, which accounts for the variability in the answers above.

I went for a glucose test last week. I was told not to eat or drink anything and to be at the hospital by 8.00am or earlier. So I woke up and drove to the hospital. This was my second test. I had one 4wks ago and passed but the doctor wanted to monitor my development coz my levels were 8.3 in e first test. If your levels are 9 and above then you are in trouble. God bless!

It definitely does matter because they're testing your glucose tolerance and they have you drink something with a certain amount of sugar in it so that when they take your blood they know exactly the amount of sugars that should be in your system.  I was told not to eat anything after midnight the night before my test.

I was told to eat nothing from 10pm the evening before, you have to go in with no sugar level so after the tesfor they can get an accurate reading from the blood test!
