I have a problem with my right kidney where baby is blocking it from draining and causing it to swell and be really painful. It can happen in either kidney but its more common in the right because of anatomy. If could be a muscle and you might be able to tell by how deep the pain is. For the kidney if you poke the spot you have to go deeper(it can also be positional  but feels different than when a sore muscle is being used against its will).  My kidney problem doesn't show in any blood work(no infection and too sudden to reflect as things not being filtered out of the blood) but the 2nd trip to the ER they did an ultrasound and saw the issue....  Go to the hospital if you're in enough pain or have concerns for any other reason. Good luck and feel.better.

I was very small before pregnancy and now that I have a belly I was having the same pain. I went to hospital and they thought it was my kidneys, they did a urine test and blood tests looking for infections because the pain came on so suddenly it woke me from my sleep and I was in tears! It turns out it was just a muscle, thank goodness!

Maybe (not sure, just throwing suggestions out there) you could have turned wrong or slept in a weird position causing the pain, but try rubbing Icy Hot or Bengay (some kind of muscle relaxer) on the sore spot and drink plenty of water. See if that helps and if not you may want to get it checked out? It could be a rib out of place? You could have bruised that area? Good luck and best wishes!

Are you hurting in the front or the back? Because where you are describing sounds like it can be them, but your kidneys are in your back around that area. Is that where the pain is or in your stomach?
