SIDS: sudden infant death syndrome. You should probably read up on that. They don't have a solid answer as to what causes it, but they do know what makes it less likely. Like putting baby on it's back to sleep.

As for your MIL, whether or not to use pacifiers is your choice not your MIL's. There are going to be many things well meaning parents are going to try to tell you to do, not to do, or give advice on. You have to make your own decision and make it clear (respectfully if possible) that you are mom, not them. I will tell you from experience to nip it in the bud now. I was young with my first baby and I didn't know how to stand up for myself, my child, or what I felt was right for us. My job as a mom became much less complicated when I quit trying to please mothers and grandmothers and told them that I will ask for help when I need it.

I used pacifiers with my daughter, who is now 11. I started them after breastfeeding was well established. I waited until a month or two after she weaned to take it, about 18 months. I cut a hole in the end and she said it was "broke". That was the end of that. She has no problem with overbite.

My son, now 8, never liked them. I have a couple different kinds to try with this baby, due in abt 4 weeks. But I will wait to introduce them until breastfeeding is well established.

I hate pacifiers. They are gross to me. With my first i she didn't take one. But she sucked her two middle fingers until 2.5 which i hated. So with baby number two we are gonna try easier to take a paci away. Also they don't rwduce the risk of sids. My twin had a paci at all times and died of sids. I have also talked with my ob and pediatrician and they both advised me that there is no substaincial research to back that up.

My both sons use them. And stopped using them on their own when they are about 1 year. No issue with teeth or jaw development at all. I would use I again as I see no harm in it. Plus they outgrow it when they are ready.

My son used it only at night and nap time. He decided to stop using it around 2.5. He has a little overbite but his dentist is not worried because they are young and malleable so it will go back to normal plus his grown up teeth will not grow in like that due to the paci, they will be crooked due to hereditary.

If your baby has a strong sucking reflex, they are a lifesaver. Some babies don't have a strong need to suck constantly and don't need them. My son loved to suck and it calmed him right down and helped him sleep through the night. When he was almost a year old we limited the paci to naps and bedtime. Then at 18 months he woke up one morning and I said "okay honey, you are a big boy now and we should throw paci in the trash" he responded by saying "yes, trash" and we went downstairs and he threw it in there lol. That night he was a litter restless but by the next night he was fine. In a week he quit asking for it. He just turned 2 and he found an ancient one when we cleaned his room. He put it in his mouth and threw it back on the floor lol it was a painless process. I'll do it again with my twins :)

They reduce the risk of sids. Keeps baby's face away from mattress and bumper so baby can breathe if he/she gets stuck at a small age. My dr is all for em when little.

Everyone has there.own opinions on these.  Personally I like them. They reduce the risk of sids dramatically when Used at bedtime. But they can cause issues with breast feeding if Not careful. My oldest loved his when he was 18 month we weaned him off it and.my youngest never would take one. So it's up to you. I'd say reducing risks of sids is a major pro for a pacifier!!!

My daughter used one sparingly. She had her times when she enjoyed it. I took it from her cold turkey at 6 months. She cried a little, but it's easier then than at 2 or so. I hate seeing these preschool age children walking around with pacifiers. Sorry... just sayin

I think pacifiers r a great thing. I used them with both my girls an it helps to soothe them so i will use one with this baby as well.

I'm a ftm as well I put pacifiers on my registry because u never know every baby is different so they may refuse it or it may comfort them. I planning on the gumdrop brand my sister used them with her second son n they are very similar to those used at hospitals

With our first born we weren't gonna use them but he was born at 30 weeks and the hospital started giving him one in the NICU to get him using his sucking reflexes... It wasn't hard to get him off it he didn't really like them much anyways. But I'd rather have them use pacifiers then they're thumbs u can't take those off of them lol.

I never used them, I tried, but my kids refused them. They are bad for the jaw development and Tteeth, but they are helpful to parents. You will have to weigh the pros and cons. See what fits you best.

I said with this baby I wouldn't want a paci cause of my last two kids. Both were addicted to it. My son was almost two when he actually stop. An my fdaughter would only suck the hospital kind which is expensive. I think no

Pacifiers are great because babies suck as a reflex. It doesn't always mean they are hungry so sometimes a breast or bottle isn't needed. Non-nutritive sucking is soothing to them.
