I haven't had any other type of pain meds except an epidural, but that's odd that the was out of it because of it... I have had three of them and I was up walking around about 45 mins later. I wasn't ever disoriented or anything, just numb from the waist down.
I had a great talk with my OB and she said that she doesn't dose the epidural with any pain medication, which I'm completely happy about no painkillers. I'd watched on a few childbirth videos where they mixed in fentanyl with the epidural and the women were itchy and I'm not good with itchy!
It really sounds like she was either extremely exhausted and/or had a pain medication in with the epidural. I'm petrified of needles as well, but maybe it'll help if you can just think "it'll pass and be completely worth it" that's my thought process because I know it IS for certain going to happen and for certain is very worth it..easier said than done, even for myself, but I'm forcing myself to do it (:
I had an epidural last time and I don't want one again- at least that's how I feel right now (who knows when im in labor)... I asked about an alternative to the epidural (since I knew what labor felt like) and my doctor said they give you a narcotic through IV that doesn't take the pain away but takes the edge off... and if you still want an epidural you can have it... im trying that route because I hated the epidural and I hated the catheter even more
I agree she must have had something else in her epidural or was exhausted bc epidurals don't have anything in them to make a person be out of it. She could have had a weird allergic reaction too. I've had three epidurals and you really don't feel more than a pinch if that when they give it to you. Like another poster said they can also give you a narcotic through your IV. I had that with my first baby and will never do that again! I had a really weird reaction to it and couldn't stop laughing of over an hour and all the walls looked like they were melting and my hubby looked like he was shrinking. It also slowed my labor down so much it was almost completely stalled. Afterwards i read up on the IV drugs and found out they are passed through the placenta and can affect the baby so yeah I'll never do them again. There's lots of options for totally drug free labor. Just talk to your doctor or hospital to find out what options they offer. The hospital I'm going to this time offers walking, birthing balls, Jacuzzis, aromatherapy, and message.
That's the only thing I ever gotten. I think it the timing of when they give it to u. I had it three times and the first time I was really weak and couldn't walk on my own until about an hour later. The second and third time I was fine. I got up and was able to get myself cleaned off and get a little more comfy. I will be getting it this time as well. But I try to really waot until the pain is at a certain point before I ask. I don't want to feel like that for a extended amount of time.
I got a dose of phetanoyl pre injection to calm me down. Just hold still and try not to think about it! It's really not that bad, just the idea of it is. I think it's mostly mental and really after you experience contractions and that pain it will be a walk in the park :)
With my first I had nothing, natural birth. My last I had an epidural and I promised myself that I will do all I can to ensure that I don't have it with this baby. I come from a family of natural birth givers anyway, lol, so I'm sure this time I can handle it.
I had one and was up walking around right after. It probably affects each person differently like most meds. My contractions were horrible I couldn't imagine birth without it. Good luck.
