Hi, I just found out I'm pregnant by a HPT, I'm prescribed xanax and was wondering if its harmful for baby. I have to wait til Monday to contact Dr. Is anyone else on it and pregnant?

Don't take any amount.of it!!! I've also been prescribed this but it is not safe.in any amounts. It causes major birth defects and can. Cause.miscarriage and stillbirths.

There is an app called pregnancy companion that has a pretty comprehensive list of drugs and tells you what each one is for and if it is safe or not. It has Xanax as NOT SAFE, so like previous poster said... don't take it.

There have been no studies on xanax and pregnancy as far as I know. They use the information on the studies done with valium. But just because they are in the same drug class does not mean they have the same effect. I was on xanax while nursing and it was fine even though it was on the unsafe list for nursing. I ran out and my family Dr gave me a script of few valium to hold me over and I thought it would be ok because they are in the same class as xanax but after nursing my baby she went in a deep sleep and her breathing slowed.  I did my research and as far as I could find is the information they have on xanax and pregnancy is the information from studies done with valium. Research it for yourself to make your decision, my anxiety gets worse with pregnancy and decided to stay on it this time after my own experience and my research. Good luck.

I doubt it is safe but since you can't get in touch with the doc for the weekend, I'd highly suggest calling the pharmacy.  Ask to talk to a pharmacist and he/she should be able to tell you if it's safe or not.  I worked in a pharmacy and the pharmacist is there not just to fill the prescriptiona but to answer questions about drug interactions and medications effects on certain health situations, including pregnancy.

They can not say that a medicine is not safe if there has been no studies. A study on one drug can not give a definite explanation of what another will do. If you called 10 pharmacies they will give you a handful of different advise. Call a few pharmacies and call your ob also the Dr who gave you the medicine. You can not take the advise of one person. You need multiple opinions and your own research to decide.

My sister is 26 weeks pregnant and takes xanax, they will not give you anything that will hurt you or your baby. Kayleigh, is growing amazing and all parts accounted for ;) I would say if you need it take it. It is better to have a stress free pregnancy rather than one that which can get worse due to stress and anxiety. If it helps try yoga, meditating, listening to peaceful music, smiling a lot! Everyones is different,and sometimes doctors just prescribe just by knowing in most cases is not harmful and in the other ones that waz they be telling u that the problem waz cuz of something else..their not thats stupid to admit it

Wow I'm a nurse it is not recommended during pregnancy and if someone was prescribed it during pregnancy they need a new doctor

You need to refrain from taking it until you see the doctor.  For some people,  the risks outweigh the benefits and for others they do not.

I am 17 weeks also in the medical feild, And I still take it. My doctor says since I have been on it so long it would be harmful to the baby for me to have these horrible panic attacks. My doctor suggested taper taper and then will put me on busbar. She wants me to go at least my last two months without if possible. But true xanax is a class drug that is, not safe. You have to listen to your body and dont hold anything back from your Doctor, I trust mine.

Some of these women need to do research because if you stop taking this medicine and have been on it a while... one of the withdraw symptoms is seizures and how do you think that will effect your baby... they have not studied this medication on pregnant women yet but they are trying to gather information now on it. It is deemed unsafe because of the class drug it is and some others in that class have been studied and proven harmful. They want to give some warning so they say that it is unlikely to be safe. I am also in the medical field and have done loads of research on the matter and have known people who took it and had perfectly healthy babies. It would be best to slowly taper down toward the end of pregnancy to a very low dose in like your last two months. This will decrease the chances of your baby having withdrawal after birth. Please do not risk you or your baby health without talking to your Dr first. Its hard to give good advice without knowing you medical history and how severe your symptoms are without medications and the dose you are on.  I have did research and have personal experience with it during breastfeeding as well as with others in the same class of drugs and I know my symptom severity and that my symptoms get worse when pregnant and I have choosen to stay on this medication. If you talk to your Dr and decide it's best to go off your medication your Dr can tell you the safest way to go off of your medicine and when you need to. I had bad side effects when I came off my medicine before.
