vitamins??

My OB will not tell me to take any vitamin unless I ask about it. I suggested iron and B6. As this is my first time being pregnant I dont know what to ask for. I have been told by friends to take Prenatal One which is a multi vitamin which I have read up on. It has alot of vitamin c B6 iron etc but I was also told about a Probiotic. What should I take?

I had a son he is 18 now.. then after having 2 miscarriages my dr did blood work and found out I've got MTHFR gene.. got pregnant again dr put me on folic acid 4 mg he was healthy and just fine he is now 10. I'm a week away from my due date to have my baby girl and on 4 mg of folic acid  (get from pharmacy).  The testing is very important. I'm not sure I would have been able to have any more baby's after my first son had my dr. Not tested me to find out that I had the MTHFR gene! Also I do believe you need your prenatals baby is taking all your nutrients and vitamins from you so you have to replenish they will make you feel so much better.  They made me very ill in my first trimester but I started taking them at night right before bed and bam no more feeling throwing them up.

I didn't take vitamins. Prenatal vitamins made me sick. Take a prenatal vitamin if u want, and the Dr. Should have done blood tests to see how good Ur iron and everything is. I wouldn't take anything that the Dr. Doesn't tell me. To much iron you're going to be constipated

They are good starters, and you can't take too many probiotics so definitely get some of those to boost your immunity.

But the best thing would be to get a blood test for just about every vitamin and mineral you can think of and build up from there.

Plus a test for the MTHFR gene which 50% of the population have. Recent research has shown people with this gene do not absorb folic acid properly and you would need an 'activated' prenatal, or just an activated B vitamin to have along with your normal prenatal. If you don't want the test, I'd recommend getting an activated prenatal from a health food shop to be safe.

I also found I needed much more iron, vitamin D, magnesium and calcium, plus a few of the 'b's. So I needed a special prenatal plus a bunch of extra supplements. I went over all this with my naturopath/fertility expert (she's both) to make sure I had the right doses. Just taking a prenatal wouldn't have been enough for me.

That's not to say I couldn't have had a healthy baby, but I would have been run ragged. The other benefit to testing is that you may not even need any prenatals or supplements. Some people have great genes, combined with a terrific diet, and they are getting all they need from their food. If that's the case, you'll just save money!
