HCG levels still rising after suspected miscarriage

My last menstruation started on May 5, and I believe I conceived on May 19.  On June 4 I had a confirmed HPT.  On June 8 I started cramping on one side only and had some bleeding.  It continued on June 9 so I went to the hospital.  Ultrasound showed nothing at all, and my HCG was at 36.  I was told it was an abnormal preg. b/c the HCG was too low, and should have been at least 2500.  I continued to bleed, had many large clots, and had really bad cramps, worse than any period I've ever had.  My HCG two days later was at 38.  Two days after that it was at 55.  I was still passing clots and bleeding consistently at this point.  I continue to bleed and still have mild cramping, though not just on one side anymore.  My doctor has told me he's stumped.  He says if it was ectopic, my HCG would be much higher, but if I've miscarried, as he suspects, my HCG should be dropping, not gradually increasing!  I had another ultrasound yesterday but have not heard anything yet.  So do you have any thoughts on what could be going on?  I'm pretty confident that there's no way this pregnancy will be viable, but my doc said 'stranger things have happened'.  Please advise!

Hello Ladies:  I am so scared and confused right now.  I and the ER physician believed I had a miscarriage on April 6th.  My levels at that time were 922.  The following week they were around 358.  I took blood tests on Saturday 4-19-14 and my levels are 1000+!!!  I am going in the morning to have an ultrasound.  I really wanted this baby and wondering is there any chance I was pregnant with twins and only mis-carried one?

It is probably many days too late for this to be very useful to you BUT I will say anyway that it really sounds like you could have an ectopic.  I was treated for one with very low HCG levels (I was given methotrexate).  In the end it turned out that I probably had a very early blighted ovum and not an ectopic but I did not have the symptoms that you have.  You have the classic symptoms of an ectopic.  By the time that I am writing this it has probably been resolved- what happened?  I thought that I had had an ectopic for some time before my doctor called to say that she had reviewed my blood work and thought probably not.  However, my uncle in law is an o.b. and says that she was right to suspect it as a possiblity and was really on the ball because many, many o.b.s miss ectopics because someone's case doesn't fit the profile exactly.  Good luck!

Spoke to my doctor a couple of days ago and he indicated my HCG has gone up YET AGAIN and is now at 109 (6 days after it was at 55).  He is still sort of stumped - has to consult with a gyno he knows to see what we should do.  He suspects it is some growing tissue, but no fetus, and I'll need a D&C.  I read a bit about the procedure online and am feeling nervous, esp. because of possible complications and/or future infertility.  We have no children left, and I would hate for this procedure to leave me infertile.  What have other people's experiences with D&C been like?  Is it very painful?  Did you have any complications?  How long did you stay home after it was done?  Thanks for any help and reassurance you can provide.

Im sorry you have to go through this tough time. I understand how you feel....As for your u/s, it would be to early to show anything especially since your hcg levels are still quite low. You will not be able to see anything on the u/s until your hcg levels reaches 1200 I believe......And as for your levels increasing, maybe you arent having a m/c. Or, maybe you were pregnant with twins and one miscarried.....Do you still have your pregnancy symptoms? Are you still passing clots? Hope all goes well with you. Please keep us updated.
