Circumcision or no?

I'm having a boy and have no idea if he should be circumcised or not. Is it common for boys to be circumcised? It's not like I've been with so many different guys to be able to tell what the difference is.

I agree with jenniferlorene3. Overall just do your own research and make the choice with the father or whomever has say-so. I never trust info from other people unless it's credibly cited because people can say anything these days and others will eat it up. Find information from credible sites on circumcision and take what you want from forums like these.

I just wanted to say about the PTSD, I never said babies suffer from PTSD but we cannot say whether they suffer from it or not, if neurologists don't know the answer to that question than neither do we. Doctors and scientists used to be sure that babies did not feel pain during circumcision and they only cried because they were being held down. We know very little about the human brain let alone babies brains. The pain they go through would be extremely traumatic for an adult, this is recognized now by the medical and scientific community. Babies cannot be sedated for surgery as an adult would be. Evidence does exist showing babies behaviors change after circumcision, but we think there is no long term memory. That does not mean there are no effects on the brain from such a painful experience. Numbing agents do not take away all the pain. We really have no idea if babies suffer any negative effects psychologically. As I said, there isn't much scientific study in this area but to claim outright that a baby cannot suffer PTSD or anything else is ignorant especially if the experts themselves have no idea. I'm only saying it is something to research, explore and consider before making a decision. It may be that circumcision has no psychological effects whatsoever since the baby brain is not fully developed but we don't know that yet and I would not want to take that chance if there is no real benefit to circumcision.

I dont believe in mutilating my sons. Actually not a common practise in most parts of the world. Outdated. Plus if they get an infection from the process you can actually damage their penis and future sex life

I have a friend who is uncircumsized and he hasn't complained about it that I know of. His parents left the choice to him when he got to the age of understanding and he decided against being circumsized. I have heard that the extra foreskin taken off has many many nerve endings that are taken with it during circumsision, so guys have less feeling in their genitalia afterwards.

No circumcision.

In our family, males never had any disease because not being circumcised. I will keep baby as he was born. Actually i heard ofthis concept only in America.

Get a good Dr to find out all the information as some have said they can't pull back the foreskin at 18 months. That concerning as you aren't suppose to pull it back on babies it will gradually loosen up as they are kids.  About 5 yrs old is when my son can pull his back. The only reason to become concerned before that age if they can't pee or the foreskin not growing with the penis as they grow. Now a days it more religion or cosmetic to have it done.  And your own personnal decision. Just make sure you are very informed and not miss informed.  Back in the 70-80's the thought of benifits arent really there for the majority, to have it done.  Yes you will read about sexual transmitted diseases but to me that has nothing to do with circumcision but wearing protection.  So just get well informed from a good Dr that has knowledge of the topic not all do.  We didn't do our four sons as it is painful and infection can happen with healing too. They do put numbing cream on the skin but remember they cut it off the skin of and numbing cream doesn't reach it all.  My husband is circumized though. To me we have no religoin reasons to do it and why would I want to change my son from the way he enter the world. That just me.  Just remember you don't pull the skin back ever, it will hurt them and bit not till they are five or older that the skin does pull back. Pulling back before can damage their penis. It gradually with age opens up.

A baby can not suffer PTSD from getting circumcised. So please don't take that statement to heart. It's not just a religious choice, it's a personal choice. Parents are coddling their children way too much these days and not doing things medically because they don't want to hurt their children. My husband, dad, both my brothers, and every boyfriend I have ever had before my husband all were circumcised and they are perfectly normal and fine :)

I also read in numerous places that circumsion had negative affects on their child. I don't see much scientific evidence there yet but could be found in the future since no one considered this in the past. I don't want to take that risk yet either. If adults can suffer PTSD, what happens to baby's brain when they suffer a traumatic event? Just a question I don't want to test on my child.

Circumcision used to be more popular, today it's the opposite- about 40% now circumsise in the U.S. More and more parents are choosing not to circumsize. The research shows that there really isn't any difference in risks of infection, etc.  The only real risk I saw was that rarely you have a boy with some issues of the foreskin not pulling back correctly so they end up getting circumsised later. After finding out what they do, even with "numbing" , which really doesn't help much, I decided I didn't want my baby traumatized the first few days of life outside the womb. It's an extremely painful experience.( I think it already traumatized me just seeing what happens!) It's more for religious purposes anyway. It will be his choice if and when he wants to be circumsised when they are able to sedate him for the procedure and give him pain meds after. Babies cannot be sedated or take pain medications. Teach your child the importance of keeping himself clean and he'll be fine. If you look at the statistics, at least half if not most parents no longer circumsise their babies. Much of the data on places like the CDC is outdated. Must doctors and scientists now know there is no more risk or if there is, incredibly small, if your child is circumcised or not.

I am getting my sons circumcised, but it's definitely a personal choice. Do not watch a video of it if you are considering it though that's just sick lol. I got my wisdom teeth pulled doesn't mean I watched a video of it beforehand :P That would talk anyone out of getting a procedure done for sure. Do some research look at the benefits and risks to both sides and see what you are comfortable with. Also, if you have significant other discuss with him as well and see what he says about it. My husband is circumsized and wants our son to get it as well. I back up his choice.

I'm not my 2 yr old wasn't either I really couldn't deal with the pain it causes them or how it looks. The redness and blood and having to clean it . I can't put him through that. And with my son right now we've had no problem with hygiene or anything with him. It depends I guess. My sons penis doesn't have an excessive amount or a lot of foreskin so everything's fine without the procedure. We're not goin to with this one either.

its a presonal choice. i didnt get my son done and he is 18 months and i talked to his dr because i cant pull his skin back and when i do it hurts him and hes been getting stinky down there even after a bath i wash him how you shoyld and the next day he stinks bad. (not all boys are like that) so he will be getting done. only thing is now its an actual procudure and will have to be asleep when its done.this boy im having will get done when hes born i dont want to chance the same issues it really is just a personal choice nothing wrong either way. it doesnt reduse the chances of infection or getting other things when older they just have to be taught how to properly take care of it.

Its really personal choice, I believe it's a religious procedure and quite unecessary if you don't follow that religion. Just Google it and make up your own mind that's how I decided, I was so sure I'd get my son's done but after reading up on it I could never do that to my kids but others will disagree so it's just what you as the mother perfers.
