Shortened Cervix

I went in for an ultrasound and they discovered I have a shortened cervix. Normal Cervix length should be around 30mm & I'm at 14mm! That's halfway effaced and I'm only 29 weeks. Doctor placed me on bed rest and prescribed a Progesterone pill like thing to insert into my vagina every night (sorry TMI) to try to get me to 34 weeks before going into labor. Anyone else going threw this? I'm so afraid for my baby, I just want her to stay in there for as long as she can.

I'm going through the same thing. At 23 weeks, I measured 2.2cm. My doctor put me on bed rest and prescribed me progesterone. I was having to come in once a week to have it looked at. At week 24 I was measuring at 1.4 and it was soft and funneled. But now I'm week 27 and there has been no change! I really think the progesterone paired with bed rest is really helping. Good luck and try to think positive! (:

No, apparently most don't measure unless you have had a previous loss due to incompetent cervix. However, I'm with Kaiser Permanente and I've heard that they are the only ones who do routine measurement on their untrasounds after 20 weeks. Seems like a pretty easy standard thing to do, but I guess since they are barley starting to associate shortened cervix's with preterm labor that not all doctors are doing it yet.

I'll be 30 weeks tomorrow and they are going to do another FFN test at my appointment tomorrow. This will be the 3rd one since I went to L&D at 26 weeks. So far the other 2 were negative but this week I had lower back pain and on Saturday night I was cramping and contracting. I didn't go in because they told be to only go if I get 6 in an hour and the were more like 2 and hour so I thought I'll just wait to see my high risk doctor tomorrow. But now I'm worried my cervix is even shorter or dilated. We'll see how it goes

I'm 27 weeks and I don't think my obgyn has ever checked the length of my cervix. Is this something they monitor through ultrasounds? If that's the case then hopefully he didn't mention anything bc all is okay. Should i ask him to check?

Update, Im 30 weeks & I was in L&D this week due to constant menstrual like cramping. They hooked me up and did an ultrasound and confirmed i was contracting (up to 60 on the TOCO) & my cervix showed funneling and fluctuations with the contractions which the Dr called a Dynamic Cervix. They gave me a shot to stop the contractions and did a FFN test which was negative and sent me home. I stop the Progesterone suppositories in 4 weeks when I'm 34 weeks. Dr said he doesn't mind if she comes after that. Just have to make it to the line in the sand. I have read that women go into labor about a week after stopping the progesterone! I guess we're going to expect her in about 5 weeks? YIKES!!

I'm going through the same thing. I went to my 27 week appointment Jan. 16th and my cervix was measuring 2.0 cm, just 2 weeks ago on Jan. 2nd it measured 3.28. The sudden change has me on eggshells and a nervous wreck. I'm trying so hard to stay positive. My ObGyn has placed me on bed rest, only up to potty, shower, and eat. NO chores. Also, I was given the celestone (steroid) shot to boost baby's lungs development. I've had 2 previous losses due to a weak (incompetent) cervix, unfortunately this wasn't discovered/diagnosed until after my second loss (1 in Oct. 2012, 1 in Nov. 2013). With my current pregnancy, I had a cerclage placed at 14 weeks and started the weekly Makena (progesterone) injection at 17 weeks. My due date is April 19. I'm praying we get to at least 36 weeks. My husband and I both have 2 children from previous and want children together, this is our 3rd try.

Yea i know what you mean! I don't think they told you because it isn't expected. Relaxing is really the best thing you can do for you and baby. Try not to stress, get rest and stay hydrated.

They know I'm bleeding. They said I was okay as long as I didn't dialate. I'm getting angry knowing this now!

I just got my cervix checked and mine was 14mm. They told me a normal cervix ranges from 5-30. Now I'm worried because I've been bleeding. They never told me any of this!

Also I started taking the weekly progesterone shots at 16 weeks because I'm high risk. As long as you maintain bedrest and take your progesterone everything  should be fine. Just take it easy.

When I was 26 weeks my doctor noticed my cervix shortened. It was 4cm at 22 weeks and 2.3cm  at 26 weeks! They kept me in the hospital for 24 hours to make sure I wasn't  having contractions and to get the steroid shots. I got 2 shots to strengthen babies lungs, the fetal fibernectin tested negative and had no contractions so they released me. I've been seeing my high risk doctor every week. After strict bedrest my cervix was 3.2 cm at 27 weeks. When I went at 28 weeks it was back to 2.2cm. It went back down  but doctor said the funneling causes it to do that and since I got the steroids and got a little  farther he's not as concerned. I go back tomorrow for my 29 week appointment so we'll see what they say.

I swear for bed rest. My cervix shortened from 4cm to 1.5 in less than a week when I was just 21weeks. Since then ivet been on complete bed rest and progesterone suppositories. At w22 cervix measured 3.9, now at week 26 it's a solid 4.1cm.
My doctor will not give me steroids to mature baby's lungs as long as my cervix stays long and closed but I have to continue on bed rest till the end.

I didn't know your cervix could lengthen with the progesterone. That gives me hope, thank you for sharing. I go back in a few weeks, hopefully I'll measure longer, if not at least at the same length. Good luck ladies!

I'm going through the same thing also I have to insert cream everyday it's not that bad I have been using it for a month now I'm 29 weeks right now. My cervix started out at 14 then 19 it has been at 24 for the last 4 weeks so my doctor said everything was looking good for me because it has been staying the same. So just give the progesterone a lil time it will all work out I was so afraid at first but knowing that it is helping is a relief
