Does your baby watch tv?

Whenever I'm feeding Bella and the tv is on she strains around to see the screen. Has anyone else noticed their baby watching tv? I'm going to pick up some more of the baby toys that have flasing lights and music to try and keep her more entertained.

Oh boy- she loves that tube. when i put my hand in front of her face to block the tv she will just give me this look. its so crazy.
I lay her on her mat i have her facing away from the tv and ill go to clean then i go check back on her she would have turned and squiggled just enough to strain her little neck to watch the news. lol. But, i do the same thing when i cant get her calm down so i can feed her. or if i do need a minute or two to my self.

I think Eli's obsession is with the colors changing and flashing. He loves a book we have that is super colorful. It has pink skies and bright red trucks and stuff like that in it. He will stare at it for a long time and smiles really big any time he sees it. The problem is that its a board book and if I let him play with it by himself he always ends up wacking himself in the face and screaming. So since I can't read the book to him all day long, he ends up watching the tv while I pee or finish up my dinner or whatever. I agree though, it should definitely be kept to a minamum. BTW Eli's favorite thing to watch is golf.... of all things! I HATE watching golf. I think he likes the bright green grass....but who knows.

LOL we have the same stupid rain forrest play mat and she screams her head off when I put her down on it. You would think I was pulling her hair or something. I must have spent 20 minutes looking at all the playmats trying to pick the best one and she can't stand to even look at it.

blyeeyed-  How old is our little one.

I agree that you can definitely tell which kids watch to much tv and which ones don't.  I even read an article about the fact that if you have the tv on in the background that babies will babble less when it is on than if you have it off all of the time.  I actually have the tv on quite a bit but when my little guy gets older I am going to limit the amount of time he spends watching it bc I want him to be read to and learn to entertain himself.  I feel the same way about video games.  I don't want to give my kids video games until they are 13.  I think that there are a lot of things they can do without video games or computers to occupy their time.  I don't know if there is any research about ADHD - ADD with video games but I feel that you can tell the kids that play a lot of video games bc they have to be constantly entertained from the kids who don't play that many video games.

Well Nicole, I could of written this post myself, lol! Taylor wll stop eating and turn towards the tv and just stare! DH thinks it funny, but im not impressed. Toys dont work the same for her as they seem to for the other babies that answered: Or maybe I just havent tried the right toys. I bought a rainforest floor mobile mat thingy that Dalton loved as a baby. It has all kinda of lights and objects to pull on and even a mirror, but she screams when I put her on it:-( You think a play mat for $65 would work wonders right?? nada:-( I was a walking cranky zombie earlier and Dalton was napping but Taylor refused to be happy with anything. I brought her in my room and layed her in the pack and play and turned on the tv. It worked, she fell asleep after a few minutes and I got my nap (not long enough though, lol). Santa is going to have to be creative this year!

Wow intresting points about the kids programing. One thing all this tv talk did was make me realize that I don't read to the baby enough. I'm going today to pick up some more kids books so that we can both take turns reading to her every day.

This baby loves it too. We try very hard to keep her turned away from it, but sometimes it's inevitable. My first never glanced at the TV until 18 months (even when I wished she would so that i could take 5 minutes to get dressed).

The only reason I try to keep her from watching it as much as possible is because I have read so many of the TV debates on here, and many people made valid points. Like Nicmom said, it's the lack of interaction that TV substitutes for that can lead to developmental delays. However, I remember one person posting a comment and source that explained that many programs flash so many images in front of them so quickly, it actually trains the brain to look for a rapid change in images (kinda like ADD)- Not sure if I'm explaining it right- but at the time I read it, it made a lot of sense. So, if the boob tube is on, I make sure she's not watching anything the bright or colorful (like Disney movies). It's usually either Daddy's CNN, or big sister's Blues Clues (images stay on screen for a longer time, less flashing, etc...). Plus, this baby is extremely sensitive to lights, sounds, stimulation in general. I feel like I need to take precautions with her that i didn't have to with my first.

I do want to say, that I have over a decade now of working with young children, from toddlers to 5 year olds. You can DEFINITELY tell which kids watch too much TV, and you can also tell which kids watch inappropriate programming. Every little boy with aggression problems is allowed to watch cartoons like spiderman and Disney movies. The little girls who are obsessed with princesses (training our girls to be damsels in distress) watch way too much Disney, and the little girls who have terrible attitudes watch the stuff on Disney channel and Nick stuff geared towards older kids.

I watch my toddler become obsessed with the programming she watches. She's 2 1/2 and in her head, she becomes Dora the Explorer and goes on wildly imaginative adventures. Luckily, Dora is harmless, but I cringe when I hear very young children exclaim that they're spiderman or batman, because they take on the violent characteristics of these characters as much as the heroic ones.

I know there's a lot of debate out there, but I am a person who feels that limited exposure to age-appropriate programming can help a child learn some skills. It can also give mommy a few minutes of peace :)

Kaprovea- Cruz is the same way. He loves when we watch football and that is about it. I never thought about the motion thing, my hubby just thought he was being a "man"!!!!!  The only other thing I have ever seen him really watch is the Hershey Kiss commercial where the kisses play "We Wish you a Merry Christmas" like bells. He will always break his neck to watch it.

I bought him a little playskool singing cow for Christmas. It talks to you and says the ABC's and numbers and that sort of us stuff. So, hopefully he will love it!

I see that my little guy likes to watch it too but I don't think its bc of the tv I think its just the motion.  He doesn't really care about the tv unless there are sports on bc he loves to see all of the motion and people moving around.

Too funny! I read something about how babies that watch tv end up with ADD and I was freaked out. I checked on the american academy of pediatrics website and they said a little tv doesn't hurt anyone, but babies that spend hours in front of a tv were slower to learn how to talk. The real reasoning was that moms don't talk to or read to the baby as much if they are watching tv. It's not the tv itself. I was turning her around so she couldn't see it and she would get so angry. In her crib we have the musical fish mobile and we call it fishy tv. She LOVES it. I need more toys like that.

Yes!!! Eli is absolutely fascinated by the "flashing box". Its sad to say but some nights when I can't get him to calm down so that I can feed him, I sit him in front of the TV for a couple minutes. He gets so mesmerized and stops fussing immediately! I asked 'santa' for some flashing light toys for Eli for Christmas.
