Fetal Kidney cists

During a routine 22 week old gestation ultrasound the doctor told me my baby has cysts in his kidneys. (Not sure how many or if one or both kidneys) She said this is frecuently discovered and that they usually dissolve. How serious and significant are they? What is to be expected about my son's future? I just went to a specialist (perinatal office) that did another ultrasound and he mentioned this condition increases the chances of having a baby with down syndrome. My obgyn did the down syndrome test and it came back normal, but I am not sure how accurate those results are. I would appreciate any help in better understanding this condition. First, I am not sure what complications I could face with the kidney cists or my baby could face in his life as a child. Second I am not sure how reliable is the down syndrome test that I had done at the obgyn. Should I get the amniocentesis test done to be certain? How about the risk that the test involves?
Thank You.

I have my next appointment with my doctor next week, and after that I will decide is doing the amnio test or not. Right now because of all the risk involved I would not do it. But I will talk with my doctor first. This is my first baby and I can tell you I already feel like my mom! I've always been grateful for my mother but now I can totally understand that she's always wanted the best for me. All I can think of right now is my baby and I hope and pray everyday for his well being. I want him to be a healthy and a happy baby. Tabitha, I truly hope everything goes well with you and your baby. I can only imagine how you feel thinking about the result. Babies are a blessing anyhow. I've heard that many many times, but it is never the same when you are actually having yours! My best wishes to all of you and thank you for listening!

Oh, I was just wondering if it was something that showed up out of the blue.  Have you made a decesion about the amnio?  I am just really so sorry you have to go through all this, especially since everything could be just fine!

I had an ultrasound done in my regular obgyn visit around 3 weeks ago and then they sent me to the specialist for another ultrasound to check the cyst in detail which I did this week. My next regular monthly checkup is next week with my obgyn and they will do the monthly ultrasound then.

I am so sorry for what you are going through.  It seems like the worry never ends.  Why do you have a weekly u/s, was there a reason for that to begin with?  I am sorry, but I don't know anything about fetal cysts.  Did you already have your 20 week quad scan and they showed up later???

I am sorry that you are going through this. I have been dealing with something similar and I was told by alot of people that false positives were more likely than false negitives as far as testing for DS. My tests came back abnormal with my chances of a DS baby were 1:178. I turned down my amnio today because I would rather not take chances with my baby. I do plan on getting one later on just to give me peice of mind. Doing the amnio is your choice. Me personaly if my quad test had came back normal I wouldnt even consider doing one. I am not sure about the cyst, but your doctor said it should dissolve?? Maybe you could just ask for another U/S later on to check the progress of those cysts and how much they have dissolved. Good luck and please keep us posted:)
