The smell of the parents - mostly mom - definately calms babies. When my son was born and was acting tired but a little cranky, I'd take one of my breastpads out of my bra and lay it next to his head in his bassinet. He always calmed right down! My gramma told me about that...although she said she would just soak a rag and put it at the head of the bassinet. Breastmilk is nifty for all kinds of things!

Ive been playing my holistic therapy tapes to my bump-its like rainforest music with birds n running water.
Ive been told to play the music into the bump when Im resting to calm the babies so that when I rest they rest & when they come into the world to play them the same music when I want to get them off to sleep.

A good tip from a girlfriend-We have brought 3 snugglers for them to sleep with-at the moment we are sleeping with them so they get our smell on them so our 3 little jellies feel comforted by them cos they can smell mamma n papa!

Hope your all well x

when I was pregnant with DD i went through a Red Hot Chilli Peppers phase. I would blast it on my way to work. She always danced along to the music.

I have heard that soothing lullabyes or classical music can be beneficial, because after being born the baby may associate it with the warm comfort of the womb and that it would help the newborn fall asleep. i wouldn't worry about it quite yet- i think the hearing isn't developed yet.

LOL... my oldest listened to A LOT of Lynyrd Skynyrd and Hank, Jr-  I was in college and spent 3+ hours a day in my car, commuting.
She continues to love "oldies" and country, its hilarious.

I agree with Tricia about the classical, its great to play softly while the baby sleeps.  Mine always slept with music, which was nice because none of them ever needed absolute quiet to sleep.

I don't really think it matters what type of music, whatever you like is probably fine, although I would avoid heavy metal and loud rap music for the little one, lol.

I think the baby benefits from the relaxation YOU feel when listening to calming music. As for other benefits, from what I've read it's mainly at the very end and once the baby is born. Don't know how true it is - but I've read that classical music, i.e. Beethoven, Bach, Mozart, etc - help the same "synapsis" development that is used when learning language. When my daughter was a baby, she used to nap and relax listening to Rachmaninov. I love that music. She ended up talking VERY early and English and language has alway been her forte. Don't know if that's a coincidence. ;-)
