Cord Blood Bank
Ladies did any of you who already had baby or are close to having baby will be using cord blood banking ? I heard of it a couple times and curious if it's a good thing to do.
Thank you for all the info ladies I think I will be donating it so somebody else can benefit from it.
It's still pretty expensive. My husband and I live in Puerto Rico, so we don't have a public bank as an option. However, we might end up paying the $1,250.00 initial fee because my maternal grandfather died of leukemia. Boys have a higher rate of developing the disease, and as luck would have it we are expecting a boy. However, once the initial fee is taken care of, it will only cost us $150.00 a year for storage. And it could give our son a fighting chance in the event he were to develope the disease.
If you have one of the treatable diseases present in your family tree, and happen to have the money I would recommend you bank the cord blood. If you don't, then don't fret over it. Some people go through the trouble and never have the need to use it (Thank God). But it's better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it.

My hospital was the one that gave me all the information during my registration appointment, but if you hospital didn't suggest anything I would assume you could contact the nearest blood bank and they could arrange something with you
Call the hospital and see if they have a program they are affiliated with, for example my hospital is connected to the National Public Cord Blood Bank which is Canadian and part of the Canadian Blood Bank, the number to contact them is 1(888)2DO-NATE. I'm not sure of what other companies are there around the world. But I'm thinking if you Google blood donations in your area you could find some handy results.
We banked the cord blood for my first child about 5 years ago. It was an expensive process, about $2500 to bank it, but the company we used was very helpful. They let us make monthly payments after the baby was born to cover the expense. Now that the initial storage fees are covered, it only costs $120 a year for the service. My child's father was in a serious accident shortly before the baby was born that caused significant damage to his spine, so we are hopeful that the cord blood could be used later to help him. The company we used was Viacord, definitely worth the research. Good luck!
I'm donating the cord blood. It's super expensive to store for your own families use and there is a lot of restrictions on who and when it can be used it sounded like too much of a hassle for me. This way somebody can still benefit from it and I don't have to pay a cent!
