Classes Anyone?

Anybody planning on taking any classes...ya know...Lamaze....child caring, CPR, etc.  I'm thinking that I'm going to need them ALL! LOL  When do people usually begin taking these classes?  I'm 18 weeks and 3 days today :)....so when should I really begin registering/attending classes?

Also, my book tells me now's the time to start looking for a pediatrician....they suggest interviewing them?  Anyone do this?  Is it akward?  I was thinking about asking my OB/GYN who is connected to our best hospital in the area for some recommendations...how are you finding yours?  P.S.  Most of my friends with little ones don't really live nearby....so recommendations from them won't help and all the women in my office have grown children.  Thanks for your input! :)

My advice is to make sure they're done and out of the way before 35 weeks, sooner if they involve breathing techniques, breastfeeding, and infant care.  Classes are no use if you wait until the very last minute and have the baby early!

With my first I took a breastfeeding class. That was a good one and I also recomend a CPR class. I read tons of books and rented DVDs from the library and tought myself about labor and delivery. I had my first natural with no drugs or any other intervention and I loved it. It was wonderful. I only pushed 14 min which is nothing for a first baby.  This pregnancy I plan to do the same.

With my first I did EVERY class offered, bathing, breastfeeding, CPR, labor classes, exercise classes, etc.  I would say if you have the money and the time, take them all.  If it's your first you most like won't want to ever do it again, or won't have the time to do it again.  So enjoy this time.  Some were great, others I knew already, DH went to all of them (even the breastfeeding class), it was time for us to focus on this new life.  So I say, go for it all.

Pediatricians... I asked my OB and Family Doctor who she would trust her child with.  From there I decided on the only boy she gave me as we were having a boy.  Glad I did, because at 4, there is no way he would ever want to see a girl.

Okay so I guess I am the typical first mom.  I'm 15 weeks and have registered for all my classes.  When I saw my OB for the first time the highly recommended that I register early as classes fill-up fast (it may be because of the hospital I am going to, Hoag in Newport Beach).  I also was asked to register with the hospital which I have done already.

I’m my book of classes it states that classes should be taken after 30 weeks.  I will be taking the following classes during the month of October at which time I will be 30 weeks.  1) baby care basic, 2) baby saver, 3) breastfeeding class and 4) moms 35+ prepared childbirth.  DH will be attending all classes with me.  I also need to sign up for the Lamaze class.

In regards to the pediatrician, I was already contacted by my insurance congratulating me on my pregnancy and reminding me that I had 21 days from the date of delivery to pick a pediatrician. They provided me with a list of PEDS in my HMO network.  Then I looked up each MD in ratemymd.com and checked to see what other parents are saying about the doctors.  I have now filtered the list down.  I have an appointment with my OB next week and will ask her for her advice on the list that I have narrowed down.  My friends do not live so near to me where we can share peds names nor do they have the same insurance as me.

I hope my information helps.

I didnt take any classes with my first and probably wont with this baby either.

Together my hubby and I have 3 kids and this one on the way. I have a great pediatrician that was my dr as a child- so when I got access for my 1st pregnancy, I eventually transfered all of my step kids there as well. In the pediatric office I go to, they also have a lactation specialist- that works with new moms on breast feeding and meds to help milk production. I will most likely be seeing her again. LOVED IT.

I am lucky in the sence I didnt have to look far for either and didnt need classes. I was raised in a in-home daycare and I have taken many child courses and first aid as well as swimming and water safety.

We took no classes, so I can't help there. But as far as pediatricians are concerned, the best place to start is with your insurance company. Ask for a list of which dr's they accept and go from there to narrow down your choices. We foumnd an amazing ped that way.

DH and I are def. taking the infant care classes...didn't see one for breastfeeding but will have to re-check that!!

Pediatrician - DH's pediatrician is still in practice and she's in her 40-50s so she's not too old...plus we still hear really good things about her, so I think he said that's who he wants to use!!

I'm taking private classes with my doula (who is also a CBE and a midwife-in-training).  She does a mixture of Bradley and Birthing From Within and also does infant care and breastfeeding.  I'm hoping to start the classes in a few weeks but I really have to look at my schedule (I may wait until after my baby shower).

Pediatrician... well I don't think I have much of a choice right now.  Tricare Prime might not let me just pick somebody but if I can I want the baby to see my family doctor.  Children don't specifically 'need' a pediatrician.

Be very selective about what classes you do take. Some of them can be very conflicting and may confuse you even more. I would definetly recommend a first aid course but I think everyone should take them. (mums, dads, grandparents etc) The breast feeding class sounds great lorri0615.

Because we live in the country we do not have access to peadiatricians except by referal and need to travel hundreds of kms. Same for any specialist really. We take our children to the general practitioner who also does all prenatal and deliveries. And we only have the one GP in our town so I guess our choices are limited. No birthing centres, no classes no independent midwives for homebirth. Oh, and only one visiting ultrasound technician, one afternoon a week.

I am signed up for a breastfeeding class in Sep. They said they will explain everything to me than I will have someone work directly with me when my child is born since I was not able to breastfeed with my son, did not produce milk at that time. They are going to try to fix that issue.  Right now I'm 17 weeks.

I want to look for a class on how to deal with multiple children. My son will be 7 years old within a few days of this baby being born.

definitely interviewing pediatricians-in fact we are attending an open house at one practice tomorrow.
depends on what you are looking for really.
things to find out is if they agree with your views on vaccines, breast feeding, nutrition, etc to  determine which practice is the best fit for your family.
i started with recommendations from my midwife and from other parents in the area.

i'm thinking of taking bradley classes.  it's a 12 week program and since i am only 15 weeks, i can wait a few months.
might do a child care one, haven't decided
also looking to maybe take a breastfeeding for working moms class at my birth center...
so much to do :)
