A few years ago before I went to Europe I had my vacanations updated and it automatically included the pertussis vaccine along with tetnis and a few other things. I just called my reg doctor to check because that pertussis commercial is freaking me out!!!
Correction to post: its Adacel, not Acadel.
"The effects of whole-cell pertussis vaccine wane after 5 to 10 years, and infection in a vaccinated person causes nonspecific symptoms (3-7). Vaccinated adolescents and adults may serve as reservoirs for silent infection and become potential transmitters to unprotected infants (3-11). The whole-cell vaccine for pertussis is protective only against clinical disease, not against infection (15-17). Therefore, even young, recently vaccinated children may serve as reservoirs and potential transmitters of infection."
-Center for Disease Control (The CDC)
“It is unknown whether immunizing adolescents and adults against pertussis will reduce the risk of transmission to infants.”
-Acadel, the producers of the DTaP vaccine
Hi Lorane, I too am in California and have been advised about the vaccine for whooping cough. My high risk MD said my husband and step daughter will need to get it as soon as possible and before handling the twins. I will get it after the twins are born. He recommened that we have anyone who will handeling the girls to get the vaccination. DH is skeptical about getting any shots and as of today he doesn't want to get it. My step daughter will be getting it since she can catch so many things at school.
In Australia they offered whooping cough vaccine for free to any parents, expecting parents, carers, grandparents, aunts etc..... Pretty much anyone who had/ has regular contact with small children.
Thanks I was just trying to get more info on it;)
I got it right after birth with my second. They didn't suggest it when I was pregnant, but within 24 hours of having her, they wanted me to get it.
my pediatrician is definitely going to vaccinate the baby, but i have not had anyone recommend i get one....
but i can't have any vaccines due to spiking high fevers from several different vaccines in the past and the possibility of having a more severe reaction.
