Wow makena is amazing!! Thank you for sharing with us your inspiring journey. Please continue to keep us updated on how you all are doing :)
UPDATE: So Makena is now 11 weeks old by actual age. By corrected age (CGA) she's 11 days old. She now weighs 8lbs 7oz and is approximately 20in long. It was the strangest thing when February 3rd rolled around, realizing that she wasn't supposed to be here until then. She came home January 17th (MLK Day--which we found appropriate since we had been dreaming of the day for months that we could take her home) after 7 long weeks and 1 day in the NICU. She is perfectly healthy and never had any complications (knock on wood--I seem to do this quite often now)... What a journey though. It's truly incredible how much love you can have for this little person you just met. I still look at her every day in absolute amazement... I can't believe we MADE her. Amazing! I thought you'd all get a good laugh from this since it's so disgustingly true:
The never-ending road to keeping Makena in my tummy: $1.76 million.
Being born at 30 weeks and staying 50 days in the NICU: $753,528.
My $2.6 million miracle baby: PRICELESS.
Thank God for amazing health insurance! =D
Anyway, because she was below a certain birth weight (not sure what the cut off was), she qualified for this CCS High Risk Infant program through the State of CA. Basically, the state pays for a developmental clinic to ensure that she's catching up appropriately physically and neurologically. Well last week she had her first assessment. The nurses were blown away by her abilities. They said that really she should only be acting like a 1 week old baby, however, she's acting like a typical 2-3 month old baby and is the size of a 1 week old. Because she's a special tummy sleeper (as advised by her physician for her reflux and because of her ability to flip over already), she's already attempting to crawl. She just needs to learn to plant those tootsies and she'll be on the move. I'm so stinkin proud! It's the most bizarre thing ever seeing such a tiny baby on her hands and knees already lol
Anywho, I hope all of you are enjoying your newborns. Sorry I couldn't have experienced the last of the journey with you all... And for those who haven't had your little one yet, good luck and just remember the pain will eventually come to an end... It's a productive pain. You're getting something worthwhile from it. I had her 100% naturally and swore I was going to die when I hit 6cm... But I didn't. I said things in a room of 9 people (my medical team, husband, and NICU team( that would never typically come out of my mouth. I'm still so embarrassed, but I know they've all heard worse. So just push through the pain. Your men will worship you when they see how strong we women really are... Your guy will admit to you for the first time ever that he could never endure that kind of pain! They make you feel amazing. Good luck fellow mommies and mommies to be! And farewell until the next update!
God bless you and that beautiful baby! What a wonderful thing she is healthy. Hope you are both doing well.
Congratulations, how wonderful that she is doing so well!
So happy things turned out okay for you and Makena Lei. Congrats on your beautiful baby girl! We were actually only a couple days apart on due date. You sure got the jump on me. :)
Congrats hope she's doing well!!!! She's a good size!!!!
Wow. Congrats!!!! Going to check out your picture!
That is such awesome news.
That is awesome news!!!!! I am so glad to hear baby is doing great!!!!!
Posting pictures on my profile!
UPDATE: (3rd time's a charm?) I've tried to update everyone twice now and computer froze both tries when I hit "Post Comment"... Makena Lei was born Sunday, November 28th at 8:34pm weighing in at 3lbs 9 1/2oz and measuring 16 1/2" long! She wasn't even out all the way and let out a massive scream at the top of her lungs without being suctioned! It was music to our ears!!! She was flailing her arms and legs all over the place and had to be held still by the nurse so my doctor could cut her umbilical cord! He was ecstatic and completely shocked that she arrived so feisty! She's doing AWESOME! In the NICU of course, but breathing on her own. Had the oxygen taken off tonight! She's technically considered a grower/feeder now and can come home as soon as she fattens up! Her doctors are extremely impressed with her strength and thrive for life! She was READY to be here!
Keep us updated! Try to take it easy and let her cook a bit longer! :)
I'm so glad to hear that baby wanted to stay inside instead of coming out to play too early. I was told that the chances of survival are great at this point but if you can keep her in longer the better. Will you continue to take the medicine while you are home? Are you still having contractions?
Great news! Hoping you make it home tonight for a few uneventful weeks.
How funny that now she can escape she's changed her mind. I'm glad you are able to walk around a bit! I hope by the time you read this you are at home where you can be more comfortable :). Glad to hear that baby has decided to stay in a bit longer!
UPDATE: I received Betamethasone on Monday and Tuesday. Still 1-2cm. Contracting every 6 minutes with no progress. Not on bedrest--THANK GOD. Doc said I can get up and roam around to the courtyard and what not. He'd rather have me resume normal activity while still here in case there's any change. If still none by tonight, then there's hope I get to go home, and unfortunately keep contracting until little one decides to come... She was on such a mission to escape, and now that she has an open exit, she doesn't want to... This will be interesting.
I'm sorry to hear that your having contractions already. I hope that the doctors are able to stop it with the medicine. Please keep us updated with how things turn out.
I really hope your labor holds off for a few more weeks!!!!!
Oh man. Hospital bedrest is hard. I really hope they can hold off your labour for a at least a couple of weeks. I'll be thinking about you and praying that your babe stays put for a little while longer. Good luck and keep us updated if you can.
How frustrating!! I'm sorry to hear that. Good luck. At least baby should do great even if born today. Did they give you steroids to help with baby's lungs? Please keep us posted you will be in our thoughts!
