Kidney Infection

Just wanted to share my ordeal this past week.  I had a bad case of pyelonephritis (kidney infection) this past week, I had to spend a night in the hospital.  It was so painful, when I stood up, I could barely catch my breath.  I had to walk hunched over until it let up a bit so that I could make it to the car.  I thought for sure I had another kidney stone but they finally dx me with a kidney infection that had spread from my bladder.  And to top things off, it took the nurses 7 tries to get an IV in me at 5am!  I had had really bad chills and had vomited, so I was dehydrated plus I have poor venous access, so it was a tough time getting an IV in me.

I don't recall any indications that I had a bladder infection until Tuesday and I went to the doctor's on Wednesday morning.  I was started on an antibiotic by 1230pm on Wednesday but by 9pm that night, the pain was so severe we headed off to the ER.  They treated me up in labor and delivery  and monitored Sophia while I was there. After giving me two pills of percocet, I started to feel better. The dx at that time was a kidney stone.  So, they sent me home with a script for percocet, to drink lots of fluids, to continue my antibiotic, and hopefully the stone would pass.  Well, after 2 hours the pain came back (called MD and said after 3 hours that I could take more percocet.)  That helped but at 4am I woke up with the worst chills, even my teeth were chattering.  The MD said to get me back to the hospital and that I was to be admitted.

I finally feel a little better, no longer taking anything for the pain.  I did, however, need to take laxative, since constipation (a side effect of percocet) had taken over.  Man, thank goodness I had been warned by moms how aweful and painful constipation in pregnancy can be.  I would have been freaking out if they had not shared their stories with me.

So, the point of this post...just wanted to put this out there so if unfortunately anyone else goes through this, you know you'll eventually be fine. Sophia was fine throughout the entire ordeal, they monitored her every so often as well as me for any signs of contractions.

natemomma27:  How scary for you that must have been.  Thanks for sharing your story.

To all:

Thanks for the well wishes. I feel so much better today but Im still home, resting.  If it was just me, for sure, I would have been back at work today but with this little one on board, I do not want to push through my day only to "collapse" when I get home.  Its amazing how I would push myself but right now its not about me anymore, is it!

That sounds like an aeful experience!  I am glad that the baby is doing well, but I am sorry that you had to go through that.  At least, like you said, you had been warned, so that it didn't scare you to death.  I am glad that there was a good resolution, and that you are doing better now!
