Did anyone have an ultrasound done at 11 weeks?

Hey Ladies I am only 5 weeks pregnant but since the ladies in my forum aren't as far as you are as yet I wanted to know whether any of you had a u/s done during your 11th week and if so was a Tranabdominal or Transvaginal one done? If the TA/US was done were you able to hear the heart beat and see the fetus etc.? I had a TV/US done my last pregnancy and began spotting and miscarried in less than a week after. Eventhough it has proven safe for most women I am not comfortable with it but also want to gauge the best time to have one done so I can avoid it. Please your experiences will be graciously appreciated.

Much blessings and baby dust to you all

i know exactly how you feel.  I had a TV/US at 8weeks and within a few days my pregnancy symptoms went away, and i later MC'. The US tech was inexperienced, and as the DR was busy she performed the US- we honestly in hindsight should have walked out and re-booked another appointment at that point but we believed she knew what she was doing, but she was really rough and it took her forever to find the little one, who had a great HB and was doing fine that day, which really made the MC a lot worse.

So like you i am weighing up all the options as i have the irrational fear of US's as i have gone through 2 years of TTC since MC.

I am almost to 9 weeks and figured that as i did IVF and the real reason they do early US is to mainly date the baby age,  i am not going for my US till >12 weeks as i already know the babies age, and my Dr is ok with that as i think she feels that i'll stress too much if i do otherwise.

I have done a lot of reading up on US since then, and although there are no human findings- as hey what female is going to put her baby on the line for US safety testing, but animal experiments have shown some potential damage by US waves being in one place to long, and the TV/US waves are a lot closer to the baby and stronger than the TA.

So although it's irrational go with your gut, unless there is a medical need stick with waiting for a TA.

Good luck

I totally understand!  I swore that eating too much tuna (most days for lunch) caused my first miscarriage (because of the murcury) so now I'm too scared to eat it, even though I know in my head it was more likely to be a genetic abnormality.  Previous miscarriages just cause so much worry for us, I am nearly 17 weeks and feel I can now relax! I wish you all the best and pray you have a happy and healthy 9 months!  Just take it one day at a time, good luck!

Thank you ladies, I appreciate your information, it is so comforting. I believe that a TV/us  is safe as proported but after experiencing loss, everything done is scrutinized, like a phobia haha!! Last time a TA/ us was done initially but after the sac couldn't be seen the TV/us was performed. I pray this time no disappointments I am in my 30s and wish to have more children.

God bless you both!!!

I had a transabdominal u/s at 7 weeks to determine my dates and one at 12 weeks for the downs syndrome screening test.  I was able to see the heartbeat flickering away but didn't get to hear it, I was also given a reading of bpm. I've never had a transvaginal u/s.  I thought they only do the TV/US if it is very early on in the pregnancy and too early to see anything on TA/US??  So I would have thought after 6 weeks they would only perform a TA/US?  I really don't think a TV/US would have caused your miscarriage but I understand your concern.  Good luck!

I was 12w2d when I had a TA/US done.  It was for the NT test and they could see everything quite clearly and hear the HB.  I have a lot of extra "padding" around the stomach area, and that didn't cause a problem at all.

Best of luck and remember, your doctor works for you!  If you're not comfortable with something and there is a suitable alternative - (i.e. TA) - then request it!
