Hi Jan Mommies , i need help!

Okay ladies, i need advice

So i went to the doctor today but didn't get to see my regular doctor. I was told i have a vaginal bacterial infection and was prescribed 500mg twice daily of flagyl or metronidazol. Being almost ten weeks pregnant i decided to go home and look up the medicine to see what i found about it being safe for pregnancy. All the sites i found said to not take it in the first trimester, I then proceeded to call about 6 different pharmacies and they all told me that it should not be taken in the first trimester. i called back the doctor that proscribed it and she said that she is frustrated all of them are saying this, that it is find to take because it is a class B. I am trying not to be overly paranoid but i also have a hard time swallowing taking a pill that has the potential to cause birth defects. There is also a cream that i can get but i dont know if that is any better....if anyone has any advice or a similar situation that would be WONDERFUL!!!!!!!!

I took penicillin early on during the pregnancy when I didn't know that I was pregnant and luckily it is safe to ingest.

There are contradictory opinions in regards to flagyl. It is often prescribed during pregnancy for women that have vaginal infections. BUT there is not enough research which has been performed on the effects during the first trimester on pregnant women. Some recommend avoidance, some say it is safe.

Clindamycin is often used in pregnant women with bacterial vaginal infections. Ask your doctor if there are other antibiotics (see if they come up with that mentioned above). Antibiotics usually target specific types of bacteria so there will be a limit on what you may be able to take.

I, too, would be overtly cautious.

i had to take antibiotics in the 1st trimester with my last preg because of infections....infections can be dangerous if left untreated so you want to get rid of the infection

anytime i was in doubt about any medicine i called my family doc or a maybe you have nurses/doc that is in your family or close friends....i have cousins and nurses who are nurses so i always run to them when im worried about something like this

my suggestion is if you trust your family doc, call them and ask them....it never hurts to get a second opinion....

i am overly paranoid too about taking any medicine at any time in my preg

best of luck
