Also the babies that die from it are usually pre term and have other health issues I know it sounds awful but its true. Im nearly 38 weeks and dont even think about it now. Just make sure you know what to do when in labour. I have to go straight to hospital to administer antibiotics as soon as contractions start or waters break then im alowed my natural birth. This is ny second child and my waters broke like 20 hours before I had my first which is very risky for strep b carriers and I didnt know I was a carrier then and had no antibiotics and hes absolutely fine.
Ive googled everything I can on strep b as I was a nervous wreck when they told me. But really its nothing 1 in 4 women carry it without even knowing that means 1in 4 women that give birth run the risk of transferring it to the baby and how many babies have you heard about getting it??. They dont routinely test for it in uk as it is so common and the risks very low. they just give you penicillin in labour to kill the bacteria which stops it transferring to the baby... and what if it still does?? Well most babies do get infected and it doesnt affect them what so ever. If youve had two babies before also your chances are so low. Be armed with the facts and symptoms but honestly dont worry.
Its just when I googled it it has all the possible risk factors and stated 2,000 children die from it each year or are handicap in some way etc. I just feel helpless against this.
Don't worry im 39 weeks today and I have gbs I was scared at first until they informed me that they give you antibiotics when u go into labor and that its very common so don't Stress out everything will be fine
I am supposed to get strep b test done on friday. My doctor told me if it comes back they will give me antibiotics during labor. Nothing to be alarmed.
Please don't stress. Its so common! When you go into labor they will start you on antibiotics. My sis had it with both kids and her doctor kept her an extra day at the hospital because of it but both babies were great.
