Ya you could prep by kind of pinching them here and there. Nothing really prepares you for the first time, everyone has a different experience.  The best advice I have is once you start breastfeeding, when baby is done feeding let your nipple air dry as opposed to whipping them dry. I've had mastitis with my first two and I learned the hard way that air drying is the best way to keeping the nipple clean. Something in the breastmilk. Mastitis is like a sudden flu, not fun, know the symptoms and sanitize everything! The worst part people don't warn you about the first time you breastfeed is the uterus contracting back as you are breastfeeding. Good news it only gets worst with 2nd or 3rd baby... so first time mommies out there count yourselves lucky, most hospitals have pain meds to deal with that.

I never did and didn't have a problem, but I also wasn't able to breastfeed very long at all.
