breastfeeding. please help. very worried

Wayson is going in 3 days old now. From the very start he latched perfect and would nurse for a while. My mill hasn't come all the way in yet so he was just getting colostrum. Well now he won't latch or even try to bf. He screams bloody murder when I try and we try for hours ( w breaks and such) we are supposed to be supplimenting his milk bc he is losing weight, but I can't even get him to eat. I've gotten to the point that I've even tried bottle feeding formula.  He barely drinks an ounce. I don't know what to do or what's wrong. We have a follow up w the ped at 2 pm.   But he hasn't really fed and gotten anything substantial in over 12 hrs already. .

Thank you ladies for the help and advice. I'm so glad we got it sorted out. I just feel so guilty. I thought I was doing what was right, but I should have trusted my hut from the start.  I figure they do this for a living they can't possibly be wrong.  We are going back to the dr tomorrow to follow up and check his weight

They kept telling me to express by hand, and I tried but I would get nothing.  I asked about supplimeNoting formula until my milk comes in bc I didn't think he was getting full and they told me if I wanted to breast feed that I shouldn't bc he would never go back to the boob (totally false btw. He goes back and forth like a champ now). They just kept telling us that he was fine the colostrum was enough. That it was totally normal... Even though he was losing 4% to 6% of his body weight daily and screaming like a banshee.

When you expressed your concerns did they bring in a pump to try to encourage your body to produce more? And did they not offer to get your formula? If he kept fussing like that they should have listened!
Now that your milk is in, it should go much better! Hooray for that.

We took him the pediatrician. Basically I wasn't producing enough colostrum to sustain him. They don't like babies to lose more that 10 to 15% of their body weight in the first 2 weeks.. he lost 14% in the first 3 days. When. I was in the hospital I told them I didn't think he was getting enough and they reassured me that he was fine (even though he screamed from 9 pm to about 4 am).. well basically I was starving my baby, which absolutely kills me. The dr said he probably quit latching bc he was trying and not getting anything. He was sleeping bc his poor belly was empty. But it's normal for them to go through phases where they just don't want to eat. So we have started a regimen switching between the bottle and the boob during feedings. We have to wake him every 2 hours to feed to make sure he gets his weight back up. Once he is doing better we can let him sleep longer. Since we started this he doesn't cry and he is so content. He is like a whole new baby.  I feel like I can see him gaining weight. My milk came in so that makes life much easier also. I was so relieved at the drs appt I cried. She said that sometimes the hospitals get so Gung ho pushing breast feeding that they kind of lose sight of the bigger picture.

Sometimes babies get weird about holds. Have you tried a few different ones to see if he prefers one or another? Sometimes as milk begins to come in it can be a little difficult for them to gret their mouth on the nipple. If he's struggling to latch you should try a nipple shield. You can pick one up anywhere there's pump supplies, i.e. Target. Medela has them and they're great.
Also, babies eat very little each feeding initially. An ounce or 1.5 ounces every couple of hours isn't unusual. It'll increase as he gets bigger and needs more.
How much weight has he dropped?

I feel ur pain sweetie. Im guessing u already got help but just in case I'll share My input. My lil one was having same issues. We went to the lactation, coach today we used a shield and she started the latch right away. As for the not wanting the milk from a bottle that is normal for breast fed babies it's new and confusing for them. My milk coming in is what gave her problems. I shower with really hot water and try to work my boobs and hand express than I feed her right after I get out with a nipple shield. Obviously I can't shower every feeding but maybe that will start the process of bringing ur full milk on faster. Hope everything okay with your little one tho.
