Late ultrasound

So I was only given 3 ultrasounds this pregnancy, an extra one because I switched doctors in the beginning but I just had my 36 week ultrasound and when I went in for my 37 week checkup the doctor said I have to schedule another ultrasound this week to check the baby's AFI (amnonitic fluid index) I read up a little on it, too much or too little will cause problems for baby but  confused on why she would need another ultrasound if she said the AFI was fine in the 36 weeks ultrasound. Just looking for some clarity I guess.

Okay so just an update, my AFI was at 8 last week and now at 5. They told me to swim / sit in water for 30mins to increase blood flow and hopefully increase the fluid then come to the hospital on wednesday because my doctor is on call and will decide if she wants to induce me at that point. I'm still so nervous and scared that I'll drop below 2.

Thanks ladies, I'm still nervous but the ultrasound is today and hopefully I'll get some questions answered although I'm sure the ultrasound tech wouldn't know much but I'll try.

It's pretty normal. Also depending on what the AFI was at the last ultra sound. Ur fluids can change dramatically and quickly. If it does it will effect baby. They're just doing it as a precaution & what's best for baby. My friend fluids dropped so much w/in 1wk they sent her to the hospital rt after the ultra sound to be induced. Same thing w me. I was 37+wks my friend was 40wks.

I was required to get an additional ultrasound at 38 weeks because my measurements jumped from 40 to 44cm. The ultrasound revealed that I had to much amniotic fluid around baby. Getting another done at 40 weeks to verify and also to make arrangements for induction if needed. Doc said only thing I need to worry about is if my water breaks at home...because if the amount of fluid and baby not engaged, they are concerned that the water may push the umbilical cord out before baby which can be fatal. But even with that news, they sent me home to wait for labor. I'm just praying my water doesn't break at home.

Sometimes due to babies position (and the fact they take up so much room in there now) they can struggle to find a pocket of waters to take an accurate measurement. I'm sure it's just something like that, if it was anything else they would have told you. Try not to worry.
