I am on a presciption prenatal, presciption folic acid supplement, was told to take 4 1000mg pills of fish oil daily. Fish oil is high in EPA and DHA... both aid in brain and neurological development. But, if you do take fish oil... is MUST be Norwegian salmon oil and have a statement on the label that says it has been regularly tested using AOAC protocols.
Not all fish oil is good... many can contain contaminants, so if you decide to take fish oil you must follow those 2 "rules" :) Of course, you should always consult your doctor before you begin adding any vitamins to your diet. These were all prescribed to me by my OB so they are fully aware of the amounts that should be taken. If you decide to take fish oil, go to a health food store. Walmart, Costco, Target don't carry the "safe" fish oil. I am sure your doctor would be able to tell you where to purchase the AOAC tested oil.
I have heard there is something about the Omega-3s in fish oil that are good during pregnancy. However, I would check with your doc before taking them...just to make sure. I only take a prenatal and some calcuim extra every other day...that's about it.
I haven't heard anything about fish pills. In my pregnancy journal book it lists a million vitamins to take and they're all in my prenatal vitamin. The only thing that is low in the prenatal is calcium. So, I take my prenatal, calcium, and vitamin C. Hope that helps!
