still on pureed foods

I'm not really sure how and what to start introducing Carter now but he mostly eats fruits (pureed) and cereals. He does eat sweet potatoes and sometimes the mixed veggies and loves the jarred chicken noodle casserole. I'm just not sure about how and what to introduce when it comes to the next stage. I'm behind mst of you because here we're not supose to start solids until 6 months but we did start Carter at 4 months. I'm lost

hi! sorry to chime in late - we were on vacation last week . Anyway - she too gags with cottage cheese and even oatmeal. She is all pureed - and some varieties are thicker which she is ok with. She will have the puffs and some times bread but not much else. I am glad this was posted because her gagging last night was making me nervous. I kept thinking "what if she never eats any real food?" - she has two bottom teeth and four came through on top just last week - ALL AT ONCE. I hope she can chomp soon enough!

She still is a constant spitter upper ;-(

Alright... Leighton can't quite take eating bread or toast cut into bars or any bread for that matter!  The kid literally chokes (as in can't breathe) the second she tries to swallow.  We have to scoop it out of her throat.  You would think it was becasue it was too big for her to swallow, but I think it gets stuck back there or something!

So, we pretty much do pureed only as well.  I too am a huge nervous nancy when it comes to chunks.  The only "chunky" food she gets are Cheerios, cheese, and graham cracker sticks.  Other than that, it is pureed.  I think Irish was saying something about steamed carrots and that is what we are going to do next.  I think she could handle that :)

At first I started giving Mark pieces of things I knew were really soft and would go down easily like banana or raspberry. I would introduce them one at a time on his high chair and in really small pieces. As I grew more confident in his ability to chew his food I started giving him larger pieces in greater quantities on his plate (always giving him the opportunity to feed himself). I like to buy the frozen mixed veggies and heat them up to serve... he loves them and they are already cut in small pieces.

Like Kele said, don't be scared when you see him gag a little. My first son couldn't eat chunks of food until he was well over 1. He would just puke everything back up. Mark, on the other hand, has been more interested in adult food  than baby food since about  2 months. Every child is different, follow Carter's cues. As his mother are better able to tell what he is ready for and what he is not. You might be surprised at what he can do.

I started with the puffs, then went to toast (in small pieces or in a bar), Then pizza crust... Noah for the most part eats what we eat but just in smaller (way smaller) pieces.. I have given Noah some rice, and he seemed to think it was good and it didnt do any harm.

I was so nervous to start Jack on anything solid. we started on those melty puffs. I would let him bite it in half (making it really small). Once I felt comfortable with his ability to get that puff down I would let him start picking up a whole one and eating it. Within a week or so my comfort level was good with those. Just the other day I gave him a piece of bread with the crust peeled off and a banana. I would give them to him in small pieces. He did really well with them. Unfortunately that is about all I have done. Everything else is still pureed either from a jar or by me making it. Maybe I will try some soft carrots soon...I am just still a nervous nancy when it comes to him eating bigger bits. Oh I did give him some cottage cheese the other day...he made a funny face then took another bite...then about 10 seconds later threw up in his bib (definitely not spit up). He really didn't like the taste. I guess we will try again in a few weeks.

Good luck on your solid ventures. :)

The first finger food we gave Phin was an overcooked ziti noodle. Then came toast cut into "bars" oh and a salt free pretzel rod! He loved that. Don't let his gag reflex startle you too much, it can be gut wrenching to see the first few times.
