6 wk u/s next week - will I see a heartbeat?

On Monday I have an ultrasound - last week - at 5 weeks (sac actually measuring 5 weeks 6 days - give or take 3 days) - we saw a yolk and a sac , but no embryo yet (tech said it would be too small for her to see). SO, what should I be prepared for? If I don't see a heartbeat is that normal?

hahaa... I love it!  "PLUS I HAVE HICCUPS IN MY VAGINA"  That is the reason I am awake right now and it is 4:30am in Arizona.  Leighton has had the hiccups off and on since about 10pm when I went to bed.... and her hiccups are keeping me up!!  lol... I am still laughing ;)

It is soo great to go back and read all these old posts! We've all been such a great support to each other for so long now. It's so sweet to reread.

My friend runs ********** mommy forums - but I am partial to this group - I don't go to other forums b/c I like this one best - I hope everyone keeps on with baby develops after birth!

Can't believe the whole pregnancy thing is nearing it's end and a wonderful new beginning is just around the corner.

OK - obviously I am being TOTALLY HORMONAL tonight (plus I have hiccups in my vagina!)

I go back at 8 weeks ad i'll ask then. I think my Dr just didn't read the report from the fetal assement clininc (in the city) on what i need done, he thought i'd go to the fact right away but they booked me in at 12 weeks but since i'm doing my prenatal care in another town i don't go to the clinic as much. I'll have to find out, i'm not at risk for miscarriage as much as chromosone problems, my last baby didn't make it because of Platu's syndrome

Hi evthing4reason -- i am surprised they will not give you more ultrasounds if you are high risk, I had one miscarriage and the OBGYN said "next time I can have as many as I want" -- and this new DR is a specialist -- and they have been totally supportive on having numerous u/s. I'd see if you can at least have one at 8 weeks - at least to see a heartbeat.

I wanted one early to make sure it wasn't a blighted ovum, and the next to see a hearbeat, but you don't need all that.

good luck and keep me posted.

Just an update - I went for the u/s today and was able to see a heartbeat! It was the transvaginal kind, so I saw it - not heard it. But - for anyone that is asking the same question if they will see it at ~6 weeks - it is not always the case. It can be hidden for some time, so it is totally normal in some cases to not see a heartbeat. This is a big relief though - since my other pregnancies never made it this far. yeah! One more milestone.

I believe that it is possible to see at heat beat at 6 weeks, but I also think that if you don't see one, you shouldn't be alarmed.  The embyro is still reallllly small... therefore, the heart will be too! ;)  Good luck on Monday... let us know how everything goes!
