12 week scan
Hi ladies,
I was at the Doctor yesterday and had my 12 week scan. the NT scan showed me at a high risk compared to others in my age group for Down's Syndrome. Did anyone else have this result? I am so scared and the Dr. really made me feel like this is horrible news, althoug my risk is just over 0.5%. I have to wait 4 weeks to get the blood test that will further tell what my risk actually is. I am trying not to freak out but this is really scary for me. This is my first pregnancy and I just want everything to go perfectly.

Congrats on your great test results!! My 1st trimester screen came back 1:1600 for Downs and a very low risk for Trisomy 13 and 18, I think it was about 1:35000. I am happy with the 1:1600 because it's very low for my age. I had the bloodwork done for 2nd trimester as well, but haven't heard back yet. I'm guessing they might wait until my level II ultrasound in two weeks(??). Or maybe I will get my results at my next prenatal visit, which is in about a week. Last time, the fetal monitoring clinic called me directly to let me know, but it took about 2 weeks to get the results.
I'm also 25. I am now wishing I never had it done, as I have no history in my family either. At the beginning I thought it couldn't hurt to do it and the technology is there for a reason. But false positives are really scary, especially when you can't do anything about the positive result for 4 weeks!
I'm happy for you! How old are you? I'm 25 and I asked the doctors if they thought I should get the test done and they said that with my age and no history in my family (nor my bf's family) of genetic problems, I didn't have to worry. That and since there are a lot of false positives AND false negatives, I didn't want to risk my mental health lol
I just got the results back from my 16 week blood screening and my risk has gone down to less than 1 in 3500! SO relieved! I just thought I'd share the great news. I also had another ultrasound down to make sure baby is developing properly and everything looks wonderful! Now I can finally get really excited about this pregnancy :)
I totally agree... the tests are not 100% accurate. I would consider the amnio only if my risk went up.
I also booked an ultrasound for week 19 to look at the development of the baby to see if there are any problems they can see with the heart or other developmental issues. In my heart I know my baby is just fine, but its still scary!

That has been my thought as well. If my ratios were lower-risk than the 1:200 to 1:300 risk of amnio, I think I will also forego the amnio and just trust the bloodwork and ultrasounds.
The only great thing about the amnio is that it does give definitive answers.
From what I understand, the first trimester screen is only about 75% accurate. Once you factor in the 2nd trimester bloodwork, the accuracy goes up to 90%.There is a woman on the +35 forum who had a 1:13 risk of Downs and her baby is perfectly healthy! She is now over the 20 week mark.

If the 2nd trimester screening comes back fine I think I will opt out of any further testing (amnio). The risk of losing the baby from the amnio is higher than my risk of having a baby with a genetic disorder, so I don't think its worth it to do.
i really struggled with getting the genetic screening done, vs. going directly to genetic diagnosics (either CVS or amniocentesis-- the only two tests that will tell you for *sure* whether or not there are chromosomal abnormalities).
i opted for the screening. i will also do the 2nd trimester screening (more bloodwork)-- and depending on how that comes back, i will decide about amnio. (i've already missed my window now for CVS, which is 13w2d at the place i go.)
what i do know for sure about the screening is that it has a fairly high rate of both false negatives and false positives. so please take it with a grain of salt. i know two women who had "positive" screens but further testing showed perfectly healthy babies.

I posted a thread on the pregnancy forum about exactly THIS. I wanted to know if its better to take it or not, cause I'm scared of getting a false positive :S
My sister tested in the high risk range - her risk was calculated to be higher than yours. It was really stressful and it meant they had to undergo all kinds of others tests. But in the end, everything was fine and they were able to identify a separate kidney issue that they never would have known about otherwise. It sounds like your risk is still very small...hang in there!
I guess doctors enjoy scaring their patients... its their policy to give the worst cases possible... dont worry and try to relax...
These tests are wrong all the time. Dont worry yourself intill you have too!
