Why are so many moms being scheduled for inductions before their due date?

A pregnancy due date is not like a due date in school where you're late the following day. The due date for labor is based on a bell curve. Most women deliver at 40 weeks. Just as many women deliver at 39 weeks as 41. The same goes for weeks 38 and 42. We are not considered late until 42 weeks. Why are so many being induced at 38 and 39 weeks instead of giving labor a chance to start naturally?
It's different if there is a complication that needs baby to come out sooner.

Agreed. And I have very very irregular cycles so there is no telling when I ovulated. Plus most of the people in my family went about 2 weeks late with their first babies anyway. Seems pretty normal. Walking my butt off here and climbing stairs.  Hope I can beat the doctors. :D

Stay strong Organicmama. I admire you for standing up to your doctors and telling them you want to wait a few more days. Ypu know what's best for baby. Plus, the 40 week mark isn't accurate for everyone. If you have a 28 day cycle like me it will most likely match with ovulation date (mine does anyway). If you have a 33 day cycle you probably conceived 5 days after a 28 day cycle. That means your due date is really 5 days later. It's crazy to be so strict on 40 weeks as a deadline.

I wish we had more of a choice. My doctor group demands induction before 41 weeks, preferably right at 40 weeks. They said that after the due date the risk of still birth goes up and they won't allow that chance. So they scheduled me for induction today (1 day after due date.) I called and said I wasn't coming. They already told me it would probably end in Csection because I am not dialated and that induction doesn't work well at 0 dialation. So I told them I want to wait until Wednesday for the induction to at least give my body a more fair chance. Still less than 41 weeks because they are very adament about not allowing anyone to go beyond 41. And they go straight for the drugs. :(

OK aonwhst about the people like me who obviously can't go through the labour process without being induced or what about the women who can't deliver vaginally..... Yes some people have that option to chose to be induced or not but so what it's not like they putting the baby life in danger by being induced. What the hell is the big deal with being induced I would still be pregnant with my first if they didn't induce!!!

pushing out baby artificially... with pitocin... is so inhuman i feel.
How would a teenager feel if he she is pushed out out of parents house without he is ready to face the world himself... everyone would say... your son daughter is now 18 and because trend shows most of the Teenager at this age are ready to earn push him her out. This idea seems convinient to you since you are not financially strong to support ..and u push them out of house. That teenager would survive anyway...

this is what we are doing with pitocin... people say 40 weeks done...now pitocin. Your body can not support baby...get induced or c section... u have planned baby to come out on due date...so induce.

remember motherhood is about being strong n make sacrifices. It not about our convienince but future generation (I know many wont like this concept).

we will be happy if we have a healthy baby from body n mind... doest matter if we have to bear or sacrifice things. I m in this world for just 50 more years...my baby has 80years (if allz good). He can make this world a better place... so if i can make better him, and if i can give world a better me i will be more than happy :-)

As far as I know they will only induce you here in Ontario Canada for the following reasons... You're at least ten days over your due date... Or if your baby is under stress and at risk of dying if not born right away. I am not sure I would choose to get induced early if given the option... But I sure would like to know I had the option lok

I was induced with all 5 of my kids my first was at 40+5 my second was induced at 38 weeks due to to much distress on the baby my third I started labour on my own at 39+4 and then need the oxytocin yo help it along my fourth I was induced at 40+5 and my fifth I was induced at 39+1 but I went into early labour at 34 weeks they stopped it but I still had irregular contractions after so they induced me because I couldn't progress on my own anymore I was dialted at four for two weeks!!! There is nothing wrong with being Induced now everyone has they own opinions but I don't think that wwe should force someone to think the way that we do and for those women who think being induced is wrong that is your opinion we are not bad people because we choose to be induced!

Now I gotta wait like a schmuck for a couple more days because my hospital will only do inductions at 41+weeks :(

I have to agree that we do induce way earlier than we should. Unless there is medical need or risk to baby one really should not be induced until we are over due. My docs told me themselves that inductions especially those that are done and the woman is not dilated lead to higher rates of csection which is why they wait until after due date to attempt induction. It gives our bodies the chance to do things naturally first... I agree to each their own as long as people are making educated decisions.

Just because you think its wrong doesn't mean it is. That's how y'all feel. So because y'all think that, I'm I suppose to too? Hell no! My body, my baby!

I was induced at 38 weeks because my body could not take anymore. That was my decision along with my drs. I don't see nothing wrong with getting induced if the baby is healthy enough to come out.

To each his own..everyone should worry about their own children and the way they come into the world and not question the decision of other moms. Some ppl want to be traditional and wait. Others want to use modern ways of making it happen. No way is wrong! The goal is a happy healthy baby!!

I'm in the medical field and wonder the same thing. Only in the US do we perform waaaaay more c-sections and induced pregnancies than any other country. For safety reasons I understand but, to be induced just because...I don't get it. And I'm not being judgemental

I'm also being induced on the 23rd and my due date is the 29th. I'm huge and tired. It's our right as women to make these decisions for ourselves and our families. My doctor never pushed my induction. He just asked if I wanted one, went over the risks with me and then I said yes. Doctors know what they're doing, they get paid a lot of money already for their job, I highly doubt they're doing anything to put their patients in danger for an extra buck. That's just silly. I agree with sheshe, don't be so judge mental.

39 Weeks and no sign of labour. Tomorrow I will see the gynecologist to evaluate induction, after the 40th week is done, as they are scared that the baby will.be too big for me to dekiver safely if we wait too long. I don't loke the idea.of.induction though...we'll see!

Doctors push inductions because inductions can cause complications which lead to more csections which leads to more $$$ in the doctors pockets and less time at the hospital for the doctors....
