Natural Childbirth... without epidural

Hey is anyone else considering trying to have a "natural childbirth"... I mean without drugs... I really want to, but I looked into the Bradley method classes... Oh, my goodness... they are $250!!!  Does anyone else know much about this stuff... My husband and I want to educate ourselves, but my goodness... how expensive is it to learn how to have a baby?????

I agree with kiki, and her nurse (LOL). Why go through all that pain if there is a way to get the same result(baby) without it !!!!!!!!!
And the reason why our mothers were heros and didn't get it is becuz they haven't invented them at that time yet!!!

I think of it this simple way, having a baby without the epidural is like trying to get a tooth out without any anesthesia!  (emagine that)! and back in the old days they DID extract their teeth without any drugs, not cuz they were heros but becuz they havn't invented the drugs yet. so they had no choice, but we do (Thank God)
We are blessed to be in this time with all the medical advances, we do take advantage of these advances everyday in most of our choices but why is it that when it comes to giving birth we still want to suffer??!!?
I think deep down inside we might think that it makes us better moms, but IT DOESN'T.
Plus you will still feel alot of pain before and after labor, (contractions, dialating, an later the healing of the wound...etc.)
If you think of it from a safty point of veiw, epidurals are known to be much more safer than general anesthesia, and see how many women deliver their babies under GA, and both they and their babies turn out fine.
SO, Good luck and wishing you a safe and healthy delivery whatever choice you make.

Well with him being a man ~ remember sometime they mean well they just don't communicate it well! LOL He probly meant he didn't want to see you go through pain like that when there isn't a need. Going through the pain dosen't make you a better mommy. You get the same trophy at the end no matter which route you choose.

My nurse told me that the other day! LOL Mine was not about epidural though b/c I obviously have to have one, it was about after wards where I always refuse my pain medication. After a section they prescribe percocet, which has codeine and it makes my skin crawl I only want Ibuprofen, she said do you think your gonna get a trophy goin through all that pain? Cuz your's will be the same as the lady next to you pain free! I thought it was funny and did agree to try somthing a little stronger but still with out codeine!~

You will do what your heart and body tells you to do! I think some of the problem is when you give yourself this goal and then you feel so overwhelmingly disappointed if you can not follow through, which shouldn't be the case. If there are means available for pain then take it if you are too uncomfortable. If you don't need it then all is well too either way you are still going to do an amazing thing by bringing that little girl into this world, and no one else could have accomplished that!

i bought a book today about labour, i bought one that shows pros and cons of both having drugs and not. i am hoping it can give me a bit more insight into what i should do. i mentioned to my husband that i am considering not having it and he got mad! he was like i am not going to be there with you then. i was crushed. i was like you ahve to be supportive of whatever i choose. he was like well you dont have a high pain tolerance and i dont want to listen to you, i am stil upset with him but then it got me thinking maybe i am a big wimp and he knows that more than i do?

hkenney~ You get feeling back pretty rapidly with your epidural, you would be able to go to the bathroom after delivery!

I LOVED MY EPIDURAL!!! LOL Now with that being said, I did labor and dialate to 10 without it for my first son, it wasn't all that bad, I dealt and I was just a kid, (just turned 16) I did get my epidural at the last min. b/c thankfully he was not in the right position to push yet, so I was still able to get it, most the time you can't if you hit 10. ANYHOO after they gave it to me I thought I sure wish I had that sooner! LOL

Now my second was a section, but of course he wouldn't let me go through it painless, so I went into labor and by the time I made it to the Hospital I was at 7. So once again it wasn't that bad. It all depends on ones pain threshold, and tolerance. AND as I do see what your saying as far as being afraid an epidural will somehow impead on your bonding time, SO NOT TRUE. Think of it this was that whole mess of pain and pushing wears you out! I mean out, with an epidural you are not near as exhausted b/c you don't have to deal with the pain, your still tierd but not completely exhausted!

With that being said to each their own, and I hope you all have the will power to get through it, but as for this little mama if it were a matter of choice (which at this point it no longer is for me) I say sock it to me! LOL

I think I agree... w/ Clairelou88... I know lots of people who have had it and they were fine... I know a lot of people who have delivered without any drugs and they were fine... I suppose EDUCATION is the best option of all... the more we learn about EVERY option, and about what we will be expecting to feel in our bodies the better we will be at coping with whatever comes our way on that day... I guess the more we know about every option, the better we will do at making a good decision on that day... good luck to all of us ; )

i am having mixed feelings about what i should do. i have heard having an epidural isnt the best for mom or baby. you cant move around and go to the washroom before or after the baby is born and walking is suppose to help alot of women while in labour, you cant go in the bath which again i have heard really helps and i am a total bath person. and it can slow labour down all together. on the other hand i am a wimp and have a very low pain tolerance so i am scared to not take it. my mom delivered me and my little brother breech with no epidural...b/c they didnt have them back then and she lived to tell about it! so then i think ok everyone says i am shaped like her and my pregnancy thus far as been like hers so maybe i can do it? my older sister had nothing with her first and keeps telling me not to be a hero take the drugs, then the other day she says oh i might try it again.......K does that mean it isnt that bad? i am so confused. then i think if i go in with the thought of not having it and set my mind to deal with the pain it cant be as bad as going in wanting an epidural b/c as soon as it gets bad i'll just ask for it and not try at all to deal with it and relax though the contractions.

yep i am confused!!

For my first birth with my son, I also wanted to have a natural childbirth. To help prepare myself and my husband, I went to my library and checked out the book "Natural childbirth the Bradley Way" and read it and photocopied the exercises. Then, throughout the pregnancy, we practiced the exercises. We didn't attend any natural childbirth classes.

When it came to actually being in labor and dealing with contractions, we didn't necessarily use the methods from the book, but we used the experience from the book of relaxing and concentrating. As long as the baby and mother are doing fine medical wise during labor, it is really a mental challenge. Yes, there is physical pain and a lot of it but you have to look at it as a marathon. Your body is built to give birth and is very capable of doing it without intervention. I took one contraction at a time and knew that it was one step closer to the end. The more you can accept what is happening and allow it to move forward the faster and easier it will be.

In the end, I didn't have any drugs. I only hope I can have the same experience again this time.
