clairelou88 - consider yourself lucky (and others who have ppl who can give them showers and used items) i have very little family and what i do have (my older sister) not only can not afford to do things like a shower....but her kids are all grown (youngest is almost 16) and has nothing left over...lol
with my older kids the few things i had left over got given to friends who were expecting as there is 5 yrs between my boys....and then i did have a few things left from my youngest son but when we were staying with friends back in 06 and had to move suddenly had no way to go pick things up so ended up leaving them there and they either a)sold it b) gave it away or c)disposed of it
so i have to start all over with this baby......i am probably pretty set with yellow and white and green clothing items for the first month or so....and i have more bottles than i know what to do with (even though i am planning on exclusively breastfeeding) i bought one package of newborn diapers....but i am planning on getting diapers from a site called newdiaperclub.com  for $500 USD you get a years supply of diapers....and can choose between Pampers, Huggies and i think they are doing Luvs now too....Great deal considering you pay a minimum of $500 for diapers in the first 3-6 months.  they also do this deal on ebay...for a buy it now for $500 or "make a offer".  i think it is a totally great program....and you even get discounts for multiples...lol

anyhow i need to pick up the bigger things...bassinet, crib(plus bedding) changing table, baby bathtub, ect... but figure i will wait til i get my taxes back to do that....will have more "extra money" then.

good luck to all....and maybe we should start a swap...if one of us has something that we dont need (especially after you find out gender) and then can swap it to someone else who has something they dont want/need but that we do....it is really simple...is a thought

i will be 13 weeks saturday and i have already started to buy some stuff....got a great deal of unisex clothes and bottles on ebay over a month ago.  have picked up some diapers and a few misc. items that i see at a thrift shop or consignment shop....plus i have gotten a few samples of formula and stuff...that stuff (formula) keeps for a long time.  i am planning on breastfeeding but you never know if you will need to supplement for some reason.

but to answer the question....honestly it is whenever you feel comfortable to start buying things. it just depends on how you feel.  some people wait til the last month or so before baby is due and then go into labor early and end up having to send someone out to buy emergency supplies...never a good thing.  but if you are worried about a loss then wait til after you have your 20 week ultrasound so you also know the gender.

I say 5+ months also because of the baby shower.  I'll be having mine at around 6-7 months, so I'll see what all we get before I buy anything else.  So far I've already had two different people buy cute little onesies for our little man, so that's kind of scratching the "I need to buy something right now" itch!

we are sorta waiting to find out the gender, but we are also waiting for the end of the year sales, here in Canada we have boxinf day sales starting the 26th of December so we are hoping we can get stuff like a crib, stroller for a really good price. Plus they roll out al lthe 09 stuff so they might be trying to get rid of the 08 models! We arent having a shower until after baby is born so we will have to buy some clothes but I have been told to wait until after the shower to buy misc stuff like a bathub, stuffed animals, breast pump!

I'm waiting until I know what I'm having before shopping.  Same as what Kiki said about the shower, but I will still buy diapers and stuff because you can never have too many of them.

Well I say 3 months meaning like diapers and things, but I would wait to know the gender b4 I went clothes happy. I will say though if you are having a baby shower it is good to wait till after, see what you don't get! Save your money now while you still can :)
