Has anyone been to the Dentist

Dental care is definetly important, but I am a little weary of having x-rays, I hear it is safe as long as you have an abdominal shield and since it's the oral area, there is nothing to worry about.  Has anyone had dental care with xrays during pregnancy and what was the outcome if any.

HI, I am a certified dental assistant so am very familiar with the do's and dont's of dental work while pregnant.

Routine xrays are never recommended during any stage of pregnancy!!!
With that said, they are quite minimal as radiation goes and also very specific to the area but there is always some scatter and best to avoid.

If there is a concern of a major toothache ( a patient is in unbearable pain) which would require root canal treatment or a major wisdom tooth infection it may be indicated to take and xray and possibly prescribe an antibiotic. It is harmful to you to have your body fighting infection and sometimes this will clear it up until the baby is born and proper treatment can be done.Extra precautions should be taken with coverage with a second lead apron front and back. We usually recommend holding off on treatment such as fillings, until pregnancy is over ( and the first trimester is a definate no- no). There is no proof of the anesthetic causing harm (but I doubt many tests have been done, really who is going to be a human guinea pig with their baby).

These are recommendation by our college of dental surgeons that dentists here is canada follow, and if fairly standard practice. it is to protect the mom and baby, but also to cover the dentist from being implicated if anything should happen.

One thing that is very important is having your regular check up and cleaning done. If you can schedule a cleaning appt shortly before baby is due it will help with any pregnancy gingivitis plus who is going to have time after the baby is born!

Keddy//yes your right. i wouldnt get a filling personally either. I went b.c i thought i might of had an infection but it was just my wisdom teeth on the top backs so i am not going back for anything :0) ... the dent. told me to take them out asap but i am not doing anything of the sort.. just to be on the safe side .. yes as longs they cover ur abdomen its fine.. they put two just to be extra careful for me. im a nervous freak when it comes to my unborn babies.

I just cancelled my dentist appt yesterday, was supposed to have a filling.  Everything I read about anesthesia said that it crosses the placenta, which really worried me.  It's a personal choice, but I figured that since my tooth is not bothering me and since it's not a bad cavity, I will wait until after I have the baby to have it filled.

As for the x-rays, I personally would not have them done while pregnant, but I read that if is safe as long as they shield the abdomen area.

Just my two cents!
