Why a negative test and 3 weeks late with period?

I had my last menstrual cycle on 2/4/09.  I am now 3 weeks late from getting my period.  I have taken numerous HPT differnt brands, and they have all come out negative.  I have many pregnancy symptoms, nausea, tired, very sensitive nipples, mild cramping in lower abdomen, and also lower back pain.  If this is not pregnancy, what else would be causing this?  We are trying to get pregnant, so I am not on any type of birth control.  I am worried that if I am pregnant something is wrong because nothing is registering on the HPT.  Please help??

It was my friend's first pregnancy, so I'm not sure what that means if the tests have always worked in the past.  But, every pregnancy's different, so you never know, right?  Good luck.  Regardless if you're pregnant or not, it'll be good to have a doctor look into what's going on!

Thanks for the information.  I did call my Dr. yesterday and I am waiting for a call back from the nurse to see what the next step will be.  I hope to get in and get a blood test done and just find out what is going on.  Thanks again.  Was this your friends first pregnancy?  The only reason I ask is because i have 3 other children and have never had trouble with a pregnancy test before.  Thanks again.

I would go into your doctor and have them do a blood test to see if you're pregnant.  They are more sensitive than hpt's.  I only say this, because a very good friend of mine never tested positive on her home hpt, and after three months of feeling just awful, and no period, the Dr. confirmed, through a blood test, that she was pregnant.  Her body just didn't trigger the tests, I don't remember the reason why, I think it had to do with her level of pregnancy hormone, but I'll ask her when I talk to her again.  Anyhow, she now has a perfectly healthy 3-year-old!  So...you never know!  Regardless, see a doctor to make sure nothing's wrong if you aren't pregnant!  Good luck!
