My doctors recommend not to lift anything more than 25lbs for an extended period of time. I think that lifting it just to get it up and down should be ok. I hold my 2 year old niece and she is like 26lbs (although I try not to hold her as much as I used to). If it causes you pain or you feel uncomfortable just ask somebody to get it for you.
