Question about feet swelling

OK, so i work 8 hour shifts and 12 hour shifts.(im a nurse) so the majority of the day i am on my feet. My feet start to hurt while im at work, once i get home they ache and throb and swell up a little bit so i elevate them.  One day they was still hurting the next day and when i stepped on them it hurted really bad, i had to tip toe around the house.

Is anyone else having this problem, it seems to be happening everyday now with me after i work:(  any solutions?

So I am kind of in the same boat as you are latrice... and as you know I'm a CNA who also spends close to 8 hours a day on my feet.   Any who I haven't noticed swelling yet, but I have noticed ALOT of pain, and not every day, but usually once a week in the back of my ancles (around where your akheeles tendon runs), and I was thinking that it could possibly be from some swelling on the inside.

Though what I have done to aleaviate some of the pain is to elevate my feet when I get home, use a cold compress on them, and to pop two tylenol when I get home.  That goes along with watching my sodium intack.  Put that all together and the pain should be gone before you know it... but if that doesn't take away most of the pain, the I would say talk to your doc about it because he/she should have some advice about it.

I've been swelling for weeks, its crazy. I think it is in my nature though. I have a desk job so I can't figure out why. Any how, I asked my midwife this question and she suggested 2 things.
1) wear compression stockings but make sure they aren't too tight.
2) drink plenty of water. I thought that was kinda backward thinking but it works. She says we should be drinking half our current body weight in oz plus 32. So, I weigh 150...I should drink 75oz + 32oz =107oz per day every day. I usually only get about 96oz but I feel so much better since I've been drinking more and my feet swell less too.

Hope that helps!

That's right Jenntanis, I read that we should be wearing those to help with blood circulation...I forgot all about those!

Latrice, you can try compression stockings as well.  That may help with the swelling!

Thankfully I have not had any swelling, but I agree with Stacey, keep them elevated and watch what you eat...also, when you get home from work, trying soaking them in some warm water before you go to bed...

Hope this helps!

Oohhhh I am sorry.  That sounds awful and your shifts are so long to be on your feet.  I have a "desk job" so have not had feet swelling yet.  But I have heard that elevating your feet as much as possible and limiting your salf intake may help.  Try to move around vs stand in the same spot if possible.

Good luck.  I'm sure more of us will have swelling once the summer heat kicks in!
