Oh and they stop using the TV U/S after the baby's big enough to be seen on the abdominal U/S. The TV U/S are better very early on in pregnancy.
The other one is called an abdominal ultrasound. I had one done at my 11w2d visit. I haven't had transvaginal since then.
I went for my U/S and did the transvaginal and she thought the baby might be big enough/high enough for us to use the belly one. She tried but said she thought my uterus was still tilted too far back. (I have a tilted uterus. Normally the uterus tilts forward, mine is more up and down). My doc said that it has been correcting itself through pregnancy but that it isn't in the 'normal' position yet.
I told you all this because I went for my u/s when I was 11w 2d and the doc acted like I should have been able to have the belly one. So you could have it around that time but everybody's body is different (like mine) and don't freak out if it takes longer to find good pictures of your baby from the top. :) Some day your baby will be so big that it will be impossible to NOT find him/her from your belly, until then just ask you doc to be gentle...transvag is not very comfortable as I'm sure you know.
Hope this helps and isn't TMI :)
By 16 weeks they should be able to do the regular ultrasound, but sometimes they will still use the trans vag if they need to get a look at the length of your cervix.
I had one at 10weeks but my OB did it :) Good luck!
Yes...they use the transvaginal because they can get a better look at the baby in the early weeks. Don't worry, they should switch to the regular "belly scanner" soon. Once I reached 11 weeks they were able to use the regular scanner but I needed to fill my bladder for them to look at my cervix. The belly ultrasounds are much nicer for sure!!!
You know I was wondering the same thing. But I think the reason why they are doing the transvaginal ones is because the baby is sooo low. I might be wrong. But I just figured the baby hasn't reached the belly yet. Cause I'm looking forward to the belly ultrasounds.. =]
