Vasa Previa - anyone heard of it?

So I feel like I am having a very dramatic pregnancy!  First I had a subchorionic bleed and was on bedrest from weeks 13-18, and then I found out I had marginal placenta previa.  That seemed to be ok and very likely to resolve so no biggie.  Then I had more bleeding and have had a few ultrasounds to determine that I have something called vasa previa.  Not only is my placenta low and close to my cervix but there is a blood vessel now covering my cervix.  The blood vessel is a fetal blood vessel so any rupturing could be very dangerous for the baby.  So, it is apparently a very rare condition but of course I get it!

At this point my OBGYN is quite sure I will need a c-section so she is booking it for my 36th week.  That would be the week of Aug 10th....only 8 weeks away!

On one hand I am frustrated but on the other hand I am thinking I could meet my little guy very soon!  I'm a little nervous about a c-section but was nervous about a vaginal birth too.

Anyone heard of vasa previa?  What about c-sections?  Anyone have a c-section booked in August too?

Thanks - we are getting close ladies!  3rd trimester is at our doorstep!

Just a quick note.....I'm sorry to hear of all the 'problems' you've been having. Like others have said, it sounds like you have a good doc (team).
One thing I wanted to mention was: If you plan to get pregnant again after this little guy, you might think about VBAC (vaginal birth after c-section). If a VBAC is something you desire, you'll want to do your research now. And make sure that your operating doc knows that you want a vbac. The reason I say this is there are different ways to do the incision and stitches to help prevent issues with VBAC.
Anyway, I hope all goes well for you from here on.  :)

Geez, 8 weeks!!  But you seem to have a good doctor and that is just wonderful!  There is nothing better or more important than that!

Good luck and keep us posted!

I wish I had more info, but I too, have never heard of the Vasa Previa....

HI Stacey

Sounds like you and Yvette and I seem to have the same tough luck.  (In different ways.)  My twin pregnancy is considered "risky" too, even more so now that they are looking at an intestinial problem with one of the babies.  As of right now, I'm scheduled for c-sec around August 24 (ish.)

It can all be so scary.  Msg me anytime you want to talk or just vent!

I'm just glad the dr. is watching you so close and seems to have a good game plan for your delivery and will continue to watch you very close for the remaining 8 weeks.  Good Luck!!  I'll say a prayer for you and little Jake.  =)

Oh I agree...it sounds like you are in good hands and they are preparing you for an early delivery, esp if they've given you steroids.    It sounds like they don't want the baby to get too big....

And as for me...well i've got Gestational diabetes and the baby is small for dates (ironic I know).  So they're doing a lot of monitoring on me (twice a week) and weekly ultrasounds...so I should be okay and these complications will go away after baby is born.

Yes feel good about the c-section, it's not as scary as you might think.  They get the baby out in under 5 minutes once they make the incision.

When's your actual due date??? Sounds like you're close to me in due dates.   Mine's actually sept 3, but the plan is to deliver Aug 26, unless they bump it up for some reason.

Thanks ladies!  I appreciate the comments.

Yvette - Great info.  Thank you.  My OBGYN is pretty confident that 36 weeks is fine.  They want to avoid me going into natural labour for the exact reasons you mentioned.  I had some bleeding and a short hospital stay a few weeks ago and they actually gave me the steroid shot to have his lungs develop faster.  Plus, he is measuring about a week or so ahead so I feel good about the c-section.  It is the recovery that makes me most nervous!  It will be nice to have a date and time though.

Hope your pregancy complications clear up.  It can be very stressful!!!

Take care
Stacey

Yes I have heard of it.  It's when blood vessels cross the cervix.  It's dangerous because if you were to have a natural child birth the vessel could rupture and then all the blood would be drained from the baby and the baby would die.   You are lucky that it was noticed before you deliver.   C-section is the best way to avoid it.   It sounds like you're in good hands.   It does seem that 36 weeks is a bit early, but trust your doctors they know what they're doing.  They will probably do an amnio to make sure the baby's lungs are mature first.

I do have a C-section scheduled in around August 26.   Well it's not actually scheduled but that's when they're planning to do it.  I might go a bit early.  I'm have a ton of complications with my pregnancy too...not the same issues but a list of my own.  I think you should be okay.   C-section is a piece of cake (i've had both).   You will probably be sore for a couple of weeks after the surgery, but after that you should be able to move around okay.   At first it will feel a bit painful to move, but you'll be okay by the time you go home.  They keep you in the hospital for about 4 days.   Take advantage of it and don't rush to go home.   With my last baby (14 yrs ago) I had the c-section in the morning and that evening they brought me my son to feed.  I bonded for a little bit with the baby when he was born, but after the surgery you will probably sleep for a little while.  That's the only thing I didn't like was not being able to be alert with the baby right after he was born....which you get to do right after a vaginal.   But the vaginal isn't so great either....i had a hemmorhoid from it which hurt for about 2 months and still flares up (I know TMI) and still aggravates me after 19 yrs.   Also the episotomy was pretty painful.   Frankly I'd take c-section over vaginal birth any time.

In any event take care.  sound like you docs are giving you good advice.

Oh wow, 8 weeks, and i thought 14 more weeks was soon.

All i can remember is the pain from the contractions from the vaginal birth so i got an epidural.  I remember my sister in pain from a c-section. I guess they both have downfalls. On the flip side, mostly everybody's experience is different, im sure this pregnancy birth will be different for me.

I never heard of vasa previa, but im sure your in good hands.

Wow, im still like 8 weeks, you will see your little one real soon. Im sorry you had to go threw all of this, im glad baby is doing well otherwise

I will keep you and baby in my prayers

Oh my gosh 8 weeks is so soon! I had never heard of Vasa Previa until I saw it in the baby book. I guess they do the section early so that you don't have time to dialate and cause any problems. Better safe than sorry! Don't worry too much about the csection they do them all the time. Some hospitals have more section babies than vaginal.

The good news is the baby is doing well and in 8 weeks you'll get to meet him.
