Who is going to pump and did you buy/rent one yet?

For those of you planning on breast feeding are you going to rent or buy a pump and when? My dh a pump today it's a double electric Lansinoh. I was going to get the Medela and hadn't heard anything about this one. It looks like it works who knows. I don't even know when you start pumping. I know when I want to leave the baby with someone I'll have to pump milk, but when is that and how much do I pump.

I'm such an idiot when it comes to breast feeding.

Wow girl, it looks like you got quite a few responses and I didn't really read any of them, so if I repeat someone, I apologize.

Anyway, I def say to just buy a pump versus renting one.  Renting is pretty expensive and by the time you add up renting a month or 2, you could have already bought a brand new one.  This is most likely my last baby and I still plan on buying a new pump.  It will still be cheaper for me than renting one.

As for when to start pumping.....You will notice that once your milk comes in (generally 3-4 day after delivery), you will have just huge amounts of milk.  When it comes in, boy does it come in!!!  You will stay pretty full until you body knows how much the baby needs.  That's why you have so much at first.....It's just because our body doesn't know yet exactly how much to produce because it doesn't yet know the needs of the baby.  But by the baby nursing regularly, your body will learn what it needs and some of that fullness will go away.  But until then, I say take full advantage.  This is what I always do.  As soon as the baby stops eating, I go ahead and pump off the excess milk.  Sometimes they will fall asleep and have only eaten from one side or whatever, so I always pump off the excess from both sides.  You will have a freezer full before you know it.  It is amazing just how fast you will fill it up :)

The list I ended up with was...
Nasal suction bulb

sling, carrier
diaper bag
medicine spoon
newborn pacifier
bumper for crib
swing
breast pump
nipples for bottles
milk freezer bags
nipple gaurds and cream
myclone drops
diaper rash ointment

Dreft laundry detergent
Glider for nursing
hanging shelves for closet

Diapers
Wipes
Dresser

We got everything, but the sling, glider, and swing.

Momofboys, I'm glad to hear your scoring already on the shower stuff! My dh went and bought everything else that was on our must have list so I'm set at this point.

As far as the pump goes some people said to wait until after you have the baby to buy or rent one. I checked the rental prices and it was stupid in my area anyways to rent because after two weeks it was almost half the price of buying one new.

If nursing is a disaster I'll start pumping right away so that she is still getting the breastmilk she needs. I think that's the important part.

I did end up getting great feedback on this pump that I have. My dh found it at Walmart for around $140/$150.

I'm going to breastfeed. I did buy the medela pump....that sucker is pricey $320 bucks.  I did have a coupon for 15% off.  I'm going to pump as often as I can.  I did intend on renting one, just in case the breastfeeding didn't work, but I intend on making it work so I got the pump.  DH was obilvious as to what I was putting in the basket so I figured I'd make my move then and there!  Originally I was going to rent, then purchase something if the breastfeeding seemed to be going okay.

Hello Ladies

Latrice, I thought I'd fill you in on my shower(s.)  I didn't get much that was on my registry at all, but I DID GET A LOT of gift cards!  We had/are having two showers,,, had one for family & friends and I'm also being given a shower at work, my work family is so great.  I have an office job at a large bank, and have pretty much always kept to myself until this pregnancy, which has brought me so much closer to my co-workers.  They have all been so excited for me, and amazed about this twin pregnancy.  And lately they are so sweet as they see me struggling to walk around and in pain most of the time,,,  As far as my shower goes, my shower is coming up on Tuesday, the 7th, and so far my work family have given me gifts like I never would have expected!  I've already received a few gifts from people on vacation next week:  two baby books, two gorgeous outfit sets with matching blankets, a baby swing from our teller line ladies, and a $30 gift card from someone.  .

I know this was all off the subject, but Latrice, but I haven't talked much about my baby shower, and I just wanted to say that so far I've received so much more in the way of gifts than I ever expected.

Nic, I'm glad you brought up the breastpump subject.  I have no clue either, but I really want to give it a try and I'm not even sure where to start with this.

I plan on breastfeeding.  Im going to get the medela breast pump,(electric) the wic clinic will be giving me a free medela manual one.  I did have a breastfeeding class about 3 months ago.  I put on my registry that target gift cards would be great to help me buy a breast pump. So hopfully those undecided on gifts will just get gift cards.

I have to call the consultant again, i thought she told me i could pump my nine month, or mayb she said right after birth, pump and store the milk, then breastfeed, so when i decide to switch to bottle(if i go back to work) i would have a supply of milk already, i think she said it last for 6 months in freezer.

Nicmom, after the babyshower what items did you have to buy that you didnt get at the shower.

Yeah I had the Medela on my registry also, but no takers. I think I'm going to stick with the Lansinoh one I got some good feedback on the other pregnancy forum about it. It was only around $140 so a bit of savings over the Medela. If I was going back to work or something I would spend the $$ on a better pump.

I looked at the reviews on Amazon and found the Medela Pump n Style got high marks.  I think things to consider are how well they express milk, portability, manual or electric, do they strap on or do you have to hold them in place, battery power, ease of assembly, etc.

I also read that it is not safe to use a pre-owned breast pump, unless it specifically says it is OK.  Something to do with closed systems/open systems and whether you can get to all the parts to sterilize them.

I also found this article on Consumer Reports to be helpful:
http://www.consumerreports.org/cro/babies-kids/baby-toddler/eating-and-sleeping/breast-pumps/breast-pumps-1105/overview/index.htm?resultPageIndex=1&resultIndex=1&searchTerm=breast%20pumps

As for me, I have decided to wait until after trying out the hospital one to decide what features I need, what my baby's needs are etc..  (Although I did add the Medela to my registry in case someone wants to drop $200 on me!)

From being around people who have breastfed, I think you will know when its time to pump! LOL Your breast will swell up with milk and you will start to leak...

I plan on pumping too, but Ihaven't even picked out a pump yet...
