Why is my blood sugar high?

I got a msg from the drs office today that I failed my glucose test. I didn't get the msg until after 5 so I can't call until tomorrow. I assume this means I have to do the 3 hour test at my next appointment on the 9th. The thing is... I read about glucose levels and gestational diabetes online tonight. I looked at the "diet" they put you on. I already eat healthy well balanced meals 3 times a day with 2 or 3 light snacks. I do splurge and have ice cream or gummie bears once a day, but not in excess. I'm just confused as to how I could have failed the test.

So how are the results Nicole?
Dont worry, even I failed my 1st test, it was 146.
& I reacted the same way as you did, I dont eat sweet as such, i was MAD.
It happens due to immense stress as well, this was my reason.
2nd test was ok, though i took care not to have anything sweet before the test. For the 1st one I has a mango slice..:-) so the test was such.

Cut on carbs it helps. this is what i do. espcially the plain flour, white flour..bread, white rice.

It's probably not you.....it's the pregnancy.   Your body requires you to produce more insulin while your pregnant...practically double or triple and sometimes the pancreas just can't do the job.   I failed the test too....i failed 1-hr so badly that they didn't even make me do the 3hr.   So now I'm on that special diet and can only have 30 carbs per meal/snack.  I get to eat 6 small meals.   I keep full and what not, but no chocolate, no ice cream, no cereal, no fruit! UGH!!   I am also on an oral medication for the gestational diabetes, i have to keep a food diary and record my blood glucose readings.   It's sort of a pain, but I know I'm eating better.  I can have all the protein i want and salads.

Yeah I probably had ice cream or something the night before. I couldn't belive how mad I was when I found out I didn't pass it. I'm not eating anything sweet this evening AT ALL. I'll update on Thursday.

Good luck Nicole. Please keep us posted on how things go. Like Juana said, it could have been something you ate right before or even the night before that may have affected it...either way good luck

Thanks guys. I spoke with the dr and they have me going into the lab tomorrow morning at 8am they didn't say anything about changing my diet today, but I do have to fast starting at 8pm tonight. My mom is going to go with me and keep me company for the 3 hours. The dr said the results will be back the very next day so I should know by Thursday if I passed this one or not.

I agree with the others.  I wouldn't worry too much.  I have heard of several people failing the first and passing the second 3 day test.  Just follow the diet they give you and you should be a-ok!

Its sorta hard to explain, so sites say it should be a fasting glucose test, when i asked two days b4 i had my test, they told me i did not have to fast, and i had a burger 3 hours b4 my test, my levels was 138.  A lot of women do fail the first one and pass the second one.  Make sure you ask all the questions you need to no when you call the office or at your next appt.

If im not mistaken the test measures the ability of how your body handles large amounts of sugar, non-diabetic your levels will get hi and your body will do what it is suppose to do to bring the levels back down to a normal level but quickly.  When it takes your body longer to bring the levels down it could be a possible indicator of diabetes and your body may need some assistance to bring the levels down, like insulin or pills.

Keep us informed on how things go

I wouldn't worry Nicole. I think everything will be fine... Quite a few women fail the one hour...I was one of them, but I ate a honey bun the day before. Doyou recall what you ate the day before your test? It could have been something you drank, like a soda or some juice...
