1st Trimester Screening Results 1:194

Let me start with, we recieved our results from the doctor's nurse who should not be eligible to provide this type of information to a cat, dog or cow, let alone a pregnant woman hanging in the balance.

Her first words were, "Your test came back abnormal".  (My head exploded, the preverbial splatter could be seen on the four walls of my office.)  So I ask, "What is abnormal about it?" She responds with, "I don't know" and proceeds to provide many more "I don't know" responses.

I asked, "can you provide me with the results?"  She said that it was 1:194.  Well, the brain I had left said that didn't seem too bad.  I proceed to ask, "is the ratio abnormal or was there something else abnormal"?  You know the response.

She said there was a specialist I could go to for additional screening that would basically be another ultrasound and more bloodwork.  I said setup the appointment immediately.  I was in such need of speaking with a competent person.
That is scheduled for Tuesday, March 15th.

Question:
What is the ratio standard for being normal or abnormal?  I thought "normal" was 1:240.

Also, I am 41 so my age is playing a HUGE role in this.
My bloodwork came back:
HCG                    65.60
HCG MOM            1.20
PAPP-A              20.10
PAPP-A MOM        .62

We are pretty hopeful that everything is okay?  Thoughts are so welcomed right now!  I heard that this is the rollcoaster ride from hell, now I am believing it!

First, congratulations and thanks for the information!  My NT test was 1.7 which is relatively good so it has to be my age playing a big part in the results, but we are happy with our risk assessment.
We get to go to a specialist next Tuesday because of my age and that to us just means more ultrasound pictures and hopefully a chance to find out the sex of our wiggle worm.

Have a wonderful day!

hi I read your post about the NT scan I had mine done a month ago,  I think just being a little older like u said has something to do with the numbers when I saw the fetal Diganostic doctor for the test back in feb he asked me before we started the u/s how old i was, I told him I was going to turn 34 in June and would my numbers be high because of it he said unlikely, your ratio starts going up more after 40, he said that doesnt mean somethings wrong with the baby thats just how the scale is with the test, and too i looked at your u/s pix and I was explained how they measure for Downs is the fuild behind the fetus neck, yours looks ok to me, there's a website that shows three u/s pixs for the NT scan one is normal, boderline, and abnormal, that might make u feel better. And to the NT scan is a two step test with u/s and the finger blood *****, if the u/s came back normal, im sure your age is playing a big role in there ratio system for the blood

Thank you all.

The 1:194 is for Down's which I believe is Trisomy 21 (?).

It will be great to go to a specialist and not have to worry about incompetent people.

Im sorry you have to deal with such a frustrating situation. Hoping March 15th comes quickly for you. I know how this wait game is torturous. Is the 1:194 for Down's? Or one of the trisomy's?

If it makes you feel any better, mine at 12w5d was 2.1.  I just called the 866# and the Dr. left a message that my blood work was within normal limits. So, I wouldn't hold much stake in the results even though I can only imagine how you feel.  Also, I'm sure putting the 40 in there is what made the difference, damn age is just a #!!

I was told that the Nuchal Test average at 12 weeks is 1.5, however many things are considered like the CRL (Crown Rump Length) which I think is typically high 50's low 60's (depends on which day of the week you are on).

I think there is concern with measurements greater than 3mm.

Not being a medical professional I would say that 1.7 at 12 weeks is pretty great!  Congratulations!
