I think 6 weeks is a good time to start doing your research on the physicians that you would like to see. If the practice is really busy, it may take a week or two to coordinate a time that works. You can call and set it up now. I had my first appointment right at 8 weeks.

Unless you are known to have a medical condition that would make the baby at risk or risky for you, or unless you are having pain that would indicate an ectopic pregnancy or some other issue, it's true that the first appointment is not very early.  Pick up some prenatal vitamins at the store (any kind, as long as they are marked prenatal) and take them, and you'll be doing all that a doctor would have you do yet anyway.
